Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

SOC: Nielson scores brace, Yellow Jackets fall to Thunderwolves

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Katie Nielson scored twice, but the Black Hills State University women's soccer team fell to Colorado State University Pueblo, 3-2, on Friday afternoon.

The Thunderwolves (6-3-1, 3-3 RMAC) started off the game on the front foot, taking four shots in the first eight minutes. CSUP took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, and went ahead 2-0 in the 30th minute.

The Yellow Jackets (0-11-1, 0-6-1 RMAC) responded in the 32nd minute. After the ball came in from the left flank, Abigail Carlson headed the ball across the face of the goal, where Nielson was able to tap it in for her first goal of the year. Just two minutes later, Nielson tied up the game. She had the ball on the left side of the field, beat the defender, and then beat the keeper low, slotting the ball home near post. The two teams entered halftime tied, 2-2.

In the 62nd minute, CSU-Pueblo broke the tie, when Mackenzie Bean scored to give the Thunderwolves a 3-2 lead. The Yellow Jackets had a couple of great chances in the final three minutes, but they were unable to break through, and ultimately fell in the RMAC match.

The Thunderwolves outshot the Yellow Jackets, 26-6. Nielson had the two goals for BHSU on two shots, while Rose Miller also had two shots. Teagen Hartley (0-2-1) allowed three goals while making eight saves in 90 minutes.

Laikyn Koss, Mackenzie Bean, and Justine Martinez scored for CSUP. Rylie Martin (6-3-1) allowed two goals, making one save in net.

The Green and Gold will next host New Mexico Highlands on October 7. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Ronnie Theisz Field.
