SPEARFISH, S.D. – Four different Yellow Jackets scored, but the Black Hills State University women's soccer team was edged, 5-4, in overtime, by New Mexico Highlands University on a chilly Sunday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (0-12-1, 0-7-1 RMAC) started out on the front foot, taking three shots in the first 17 minutes. In the 18th minute, Rachel Erickson received a pass from Jessica Schuman at the top of the box. The senior hit a rocket into the upper near post, easily beating the keeper, and putting BHSU up, 1-0.
In the 25th minute, the Yellow Jackets doubled their lead. After a free kick was taken, the Cowgirls (1-9, 1-6 RMAC) could not clear the ball, and Katie Nielson was able to tap in a goal, her third in two games.
BHSU struck again in the 39th minute. After a period of pressure by the Yellow Jackets, New Mexico Highlands cleared the ball, but only as far as Alexandria Lisenbe, who was 40 yards out. She decided to have a go, and was able to beat the keeper for her first goal of the year, giving the Green and Gold a 3-0 lead. That score would stand as the two teams entered halftime.
Five minutes into the second half, the Cowgirls got on the board, when Alondra Gildo-Ceballos slotted home a penalty minute. Just four minutes later, NMHU drew within one, and in the 70th minute, the visitors tied up the game, 3-3.
The Yellow Jackets responded, keeping pressure on the Cowgirls. They broke through in the 75th minute to go ahead again. Katie Nielson played Morgan Smith along the left side of the box. Smith was able to slam it home from a tight angle to make the score, 4-3, in favor of BHSU. However, with less than a minute to play in regulation, the Cowgirls would tie up the match again, this time on a headed goal.
The Cowgirls were the aggressors in the first overtime period, outshooting BHSU, 5-0. In the 97th minute, Gildo-Ceballos scored the game winner, and her second goal of the game, to secure the victory for New Mexico Highlands.
This was the second overtime game for BHSU this season. The Yellow Jackets drew, 2-2, with Colorado Mesa on Sept. 30.
The Cowgirls outshot the Yellow Jackets, 35-15. Morgan Smith led the Yellow Jackets with five shots, including two on goal to go with her goal. Teagen Hartley (0-3-1) allowed five goals while making 11 saves in 96 minutes. Â
Gildo-Ceballos scored twice for the Cowgirls, while Cheyenne Delgado, Alexandra Rodriguez, and Anna Medina also tallied goals. Briana Ruelas played the first 45 minutes in goal, allowing three goals and making two saves. Karina Vega (1-3) played the final 51 minutes, allowing one goal and making one save.
