VB: BHSU gets home victory, defeats Western State

Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University volleyball team added another sweep to the season after defeating Western State Colorado, 3-0, on Friday night.  The Yellow Jackets won by scores of 25-22, 25-22, and 25-20.

"It was great to get our first home win," said head coach Kristin Carmichael.  "We had some unforced errors, but we never gave up and stuck to the game plan.  It was also great to have all hitters finish with a positive hitting efficiency."

In the first set, neither team set a substantial lead until the Yellow Jackets went on a 5-0 run to lead Western, 10-4.  The Mountaineers bridged the gap by tying the set, 15-15, but the Green and Gold used a 4-2 run to push ahead, 19-17.  Back-to-back kills from Sierra Ward and Sierra Stugelmeyer extended the Yellow Jackets lead.  A kill from Carisa Becerra gave the Yellow Jackets a 25-22 set victory over the Mountaineers.

After a back-and-forth affair, Western State took a 9-6 lead over the Green and Gold in the second set. A service ace from Katherine Welniak and kills from Laurel Lech and Madison Hoopman helped the Yellow Jackets go on a 5-2 run to tie the set, 16-16.  The Green and Gold went on to take the second set, 25-22, to lead the match, 2-0.

Black Hills State attacked early in the third set to jump ahead of Western State, but the Mountaineers tied up the set and eventually take hold of a 14-12 lead.  The Yellow Jackets took back the lead after another kill from both Hoopman and Becerra to make the score, 20-17, in favor of the Green and Gold.  The Yellow Jackets went on to take the set, and the match, 3-0.

Hoopman led BHSU with eight kills, followed by Ellise Lech with seven.  Laurel Lech led with 29 assists, while Ellise Lech led the Yellow Jackets with 12 digs and three blocks.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 6, to face Colorado Mesa.  First serve is set at 5:30 p.m. at the Donald E. Young Center
