Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Yellow Jackets finished up the home stand weekend with a 3-0 loss to Colorado Mesa on Saturday night. The Mavericks won by scores of 25-11, 25-16, and 25-16.
In the first set, Colorado Mesa attacked early with a 4-0 run to lead the Yellow Jackets, 9-2. A kill from both
Sierra Stugelmeyer and
Carisa Becerra helped cut the Mavericks lead. Mesa then used a 6-2 run to push the score to 19-7 in favor of the Mavericks. Unable to bridge the gap, the Yellow Jackets fell in the initial set, 25-11.
With back-and-forth action in the second set, the Yellow Jackets started to find momentum, trailing the Mavericks by one. A kill from
Makayla Bell tied up the set, 11-11. Colorado Mesa used an 8-2 run to take the second set, 25-15, to lead the Green and Gold, 2-0, in the match.
A service ace by
Jessy Hibl tied up the match, 8-8, before the Mavericks went on 5-0 run to take back the lead.
Laurel Lech broke the run with a kill of her own to cut Mesa's lead. Back-to-back blocks from
Laurel Lech and Bell shifted the momentum with a 17-11 score, in favor of the Mavericks. Colorado Mesa went on to take the set and the match, 3-0.
Black Hills State will travel to southern Colorado on Oct. 12 and 13 to take on Fort Lewis and Adams Sate. First serve is set at 7 p.m. on Friday in Durango, Colo., and 5 p.m. on Saturday in Alamosa, Colo.
