SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University volleyball team swept in-state rival, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, 3-0, on Friday evening. The match was the final game of the season, and the Yellow Jackets won by the scores of 25-23, 25-20, and 25-20, to sweep the Hardrockers for the second time this year.
"I was really pleased with our emotional consistency tonight, and it was a great team win," said head coach
Kristin Carmichael. "Beating South Dakota Mines both times this season was a definite highlight of the year."
The Yellow Jackets (9-16, 6-12 RMAC) came out hot in the first set, jumping out to a 10-2 lead, forcing an early timeout by the Hardrockers (4-24, 1-17 RMAC). South Dakota Mines eventually came back to make it a one-point game, 19-18, but a kill by
Jadie DeLange put the home team up two, 20-18. SDM came within one again at 24-23, but BHSU would immediately record a side out to take the initial set, 25-23.
Set two started out with the Hardrockers on the front foot, taking a 4-1 lead. However, the home team fought back to tie up the set, 10-10, and would not look back. The Yellow Jackets would go on to win the set, 25-20, as
Carisa Becerra's set point kill gave BHSU a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Hardrockers fought to stay with the Yellow Jackets in set three, but the Green and Gold proved too much. With the score tied, 8-8, a kill by DeLange started a 7-2 run for the Yellow Jackets, as they grabbed control of the set. South Dakota Mines would not come closer than two points the remainder of the set, and the season would end on a kill by
Ellise Lech to secure the 25-20, set three, and 3-0, match victory.
Ellise and
Laurel Lech each finished with a double-double.
Ellise Lech tallied 12 kills and 12 digs, while
Laurel Lech recorded 35 assists and 11 digs.
Reilley Baty led the Yellow Jackets with 15 digs.
Following the match, Yellow Jacket volleyball alumnae were recognized, including the 2008 Dakota Athletic Conference Champion team.
