MBB: Yellow Jackets edge Hardrockers to earn 66-65 rivalry win

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Dez Stoudamire sank four threes, as the Black Hills State University men's basketball team edged South Dakota School of Mines, 66-65, on Tuesday evening.

Stoudamire finished with 14 points, going 4-for-5 from beyond the arc to lead the Yellow Jackets (12-10, 9-9 RMAC). Makaleb McInnis had 13 points, and Wyatt Krogman added 10.

BHSU jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first half, as Wyatt Krogman scored five points. The visitors extended the lead out to as many as 11 points, at 18-7, with 14:21 left in the opening half, but South Dakota Mines (7-16, 4-14 RMAC) chipped away, eventually tying the game, 23-23, with 5:48 left in the period. The Hardrockers then used a 10-2 run to close out the half, and take a 33-25 lead into the locker room. Fraser Malcolm drained a half-court heave which would have brought the Yellow Jackets within five, but he released it just after the buzzer sounded.

After trading off baskets to begin the second half, the Yellow Jacket defense got a stop, and Krogman took advantage on the other end, sinking a three-pointer to pull the Green and Gold within three, 35-32. However, BHSU was unable to get closer until there was 10 minutes to play in the game. With 10:02 remaining, Makaleb McInnis made a trey to bring the Jackets within one, before Jackson Ehrlin scored a layup to give the visitors their first lead since the first half.

The rivalry game tightened up, with neither team holding a lead of more than three points for the remainder of the game. With 48 seconds left, and the score tied, 62-62, McInnis was fouled, stepped to the free throw line, and sank both the shots to give BHSU a two point lead. On the following possession, Jake Fiddler scored a layup and was fouled, making his free throw to give the Hardrockers a one point lead, 65-64. The back-and-forth continued, with Dez Stoudamire getting fouled and knocking down both of his shots at the charity stripe to give the lead back to the visitors with 20 seconds remaining. The Yellow Jackets were able to get a stop on defense, holding on to earn the rivalry win.

BHSU shot 44.2 percent from the field (23-for-52), while SDM was 51.0 percent from the floor (26-for-51). The Yellow Jackets were 12-for-24 (50.0 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Hardrockers were 7-for-15 (46.7 percent) on three-pointers. BHSU was 8-for-10 (80.0 percent) from the free throw line, while South Dakota Mines was 6-for-9 (66.7 percent).  The Green and Gold were outrebounded by the Hardrockers, 26-20.

Fiddler led the Hardrockers with 14 points, while Logan Elers chipped in 11.

The Green and Gold next come home to play Colorado Christian on Saturday, February 10. The game, which will be Legacy Family Night, is scheduled to tipoff at 6 p.m.
