Box Score 2 STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Black Hills State University volleyball team swept Southwest Baptist, 3-0, in their final match of the Tarleton Invitational to split the day on Saturday with scores of, 25-23, 25-23, and 25-28.
"It was exciting to see us be both aggressive and smart on offense," said head coach
Kristin Carmichael. "We were timing up much better on blocking today as well. It's always great to get the first win of the season, I'm excited to see what the future brings for this team."
MSU 3, BHSU 0
In the first match of the day, the Yellow Jackets fell, 3-0, to Midwestern State by scores of 27-25, 26-24, and 25-21.
With back-and-forth action in the first set, the Yellow Jackets pushed ahead leading MSU 12-9. A kill from both
Sierra Stugelmeyer and
Carisa Becerra, as well as service ace by
Katherine Welniak and a kill by
Laurel Lech made the game, 23-16, in favor of BHSU.
Midwestern took a, 3-1, lead in the second set over the Yellow Jackets before a kill by freshman
Sierra Ward tied the game, 8-8. An attack error by the Mustangs tied the set again, 24-24, but MSU finished the game with a 2-0 run to take the set, 26-24.
With another back-and-forth game, MSU took a, 7-5, lead, and held on to win the set, 25-21, and the match, 3-0.
Stugelmeyer led the Yellow Jackets with nine kills, while
Laurel Lech had 26 assists.
BHSU 3, SBU 0
The Yellow Jackets attacked early in the second match to take a 5-1 lead over Southwest Baptist. An error from the Bearcats and a block by Becerra and
Jadie DeLange made the game, 7-3. Then SBU used a 6-0 run to tie up the set, 14-14. The Yellow Jackets tied up the set, 23-23, and went on to take the first set, 25-23.
In the second set, the Green and Gold held a tight lead before making a, 15-7, jump midway through the game. The Yellow Jackets found their rhythm to lead the Bearcats, 20-13, and winning another set, 23-25.
BHSU took care of business in the final set of the match taking an early, 8-1, lead, and eventually went on to finish the set, 25-18, and the match, 3-0.
DeLange led the match with nine kills, while Lech had 26 assists.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action for the Augustana Tournament on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. Their first match is set for 9 a.m. against Fort Hays State, before playing the University of Mary at 4:30 p.m.
