ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Black Hills State University women's soccer team was edged by Northern State, 2-0, on Saturday evening.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with
Mikayla Hernandez getting off the first shot for the Yellow Jackets (0-2) in the third minute. In the 39th minute, the Wolves () took a 1-0 lead off a headed goal. Northern State outshot BHSU, 7-3, in the first period, with the Wolves putting two shots on goal, and the Green and Gold having one on frame.
Although NSU took the first two shots of the second half, the Yellow Jackets had a golden opportunity in the 51st minute when they had a penalty shot. Unfortunately, Jessica Otta saved
Alexandria Lisenbe's shot from the spot, keeping the Wolves lead intact. BHSU was unable to break through, and Northern State secured the victory when Darian Leschewski scored her second of the game in the 86th minute.
The Yellow Jackets were outshot, 23-10, and the Wolves held an 11-6 lead in shots on goal.
Rachel Erickson led the Green and Gold with four shots, all on frame.
Dz-Rae Jara (0-2) played all 90 minutes in goal, allowing two goals and making nine saves.
BHSU is next in action on Monday, September 3. The Yellow Jackets take on the University of Sioux Falls at 1 p.m.
