SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State rodeo team sets out to North Platte, Neb., to compete in the Mid-Plains CC Rodeo on Sept. 14 and 15. The rodeo is hosted by Mid-Plains Community College.
The Yellow Jackets travel after scoring a total of 970 points at the Falcon Frontier Days Rodeo, in Wisconsin. The men's team placed third at the rodeo with 420 points, as the women's team swept the competition scoring 550 points, over 150 points better than second place South Dakota State University.
Collin Palmer placed third in the men's all-around with 190 points, while four Yellow Jackets placed in the top four of the women's all-around. Leading the women's team was
Carlee Johnston with 230 points followed by
KeAnna Ward,
Jada Maher, and
Tayle Brink.
The women's team currently sits first in the region and third in the nation, while the men's team are ranked third in the region and seventh nationally.
In barrel racing,
Alyssa Lockhart leads the region with 180 points, while Maher and Brink follow in fifth and sixth. Ward is on top in breakaway roping with 150 points, just 20 points in front of teammate Maher.
For the men's team, Palmer resides at third with 110 points in team roping and fourth in tie down roping. In team roping heeler,
Chandler Comfort has 120 points and is ranked third followed by
Colton Backhaus in fourth with 110.
Following the weekend, the Yellow Jackets take a break before heading east for the Iowa Central CC Rodeo on Sept. 28 and 29.
