Erickson's goal not enough as soccer falls to Grizzlies

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Rachel Erickson scored her first goal as a Yellow Jacket, but the Black Hills State University women's soccer team fell to Adams State University, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon.

The Grizzlies (2-4, 1-1 RMAC) opened the match on the front foot, taking five shots in the first 15 minutes, before Diana Cerillo knocked in a goal to put ASU ahead, 1-0, in the 15th minute. The rest of the first half was a back-and-forth affair, with each team getting off just one shot between the 15th and 34th minutes. BHSU (0-7, 0-2 RMAC) went into the break trailing, 1-0.

Just six minutes into the second half, Erickson scored to tie the game, 1-1. In the 52nd minute, Mikayla Hernandez took a corner kick. Rose Miller got the first touch, finding Erickson in the box, who knocked it through for her first career goal.

In the 62nd minute, Adams State regained the lead, when Natalie Wheelock scored a headed goal off a corner. The Grizzlies would add insurance goals in the 64th, 70th, and 82nd minutes, to earn a 5-1 victory.

The Grizzlies outshot the Yellow Jackets, 25-6. Miller led BHSU with two shots, while Holly Burley, Erickson, Kenisha Melanson, and Mikayla Hernandez each tallied one. Zoe Baldwin (0-5) played all 90 minutes in net, allowing five goals and making 10 saves.

Cerillo, Wheelock, Chloe Cook, Breana Flores, and Kendall Weld each scored for ASU. Corri Zaiger earned the victory in net for the Grizzlies, allowing one goal and making two saves.

The Green and Gold will next return to Spearfish to open the home slate of games. The Yellow Jackets welcome Westminster and Dixie State on September 21 and 23. Friday's game is scheduled to kickoff at 4 p.m., while Sunday's match will begin at 11:15 a.m.
