GUNNISON, Colo. – The Yellow Jacket Volleyball team triumphed against Western Colorado Mountaineers in a 3-0 match on Saturday night. Â
"We had our best week of practice to date and it was great to finish that with two solid matches this weekend," said head coachÂ
Kristin Carmichael. "Road wins are so important in conference play and we are excited to keep building on this."
The first and third sets were back and forth with the first set having 6 ties and 2 lead changes. The Yellow Jackets (8-11, 6-5 RMAC) with their 3-5 road record stepped into the Paul Wright Gymnasium ready to come back after a disappointing 5-set loss against Colorado Mesa Friday night. Western Colorado Mountaineers (8-11, 4-7 RMAC) took the lead in the first set 9-8 and pushed the lead to 12-8 before the Yellow Jackets rallied to take back the lead.
Leading into the second set, the Yellow Jackets took a commanding lead and did not let up after a tie at 2-2. Thanks to the cumulative 19 kills in the second set, the Jackets minimized their attack errors to 5 and were able to take the set victory.
The final set in the match proved to be a back and forth fight that saw four tie scores and two lead changes early in the set having each score answered throughout the set. The Jackets had the largest lead later in the third with a score of 21-16 before the Mountaineers rallied back to within two points where they stayed until the final 25-23 score that gave Black Hills State University the victory.
