SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University soccer team heads to Billings, Montana, for the sixth annual Rimrock Classic. The Yellow Jackets will play the University of Mary on September 12 at 1 p.m., before taking on Carroll College September 14 at noon. The games are hosted by Montana State University Billings.
Scouting the Marauders
The University of Mary is located in Bismarck, N.D., and plays in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Thursday's match with BHSU will be the team's opening game of the season. The Marauders were selected to finish seventh in the NSIC after going 8-8-3 overall in 2018, and 7-6-2 in league play. They made it to the conference semifinals.
Returning to lead the Marauder defense is senior Kylee Welch. She earned All-Northern Sun Third Team last year. Also returning is Hannah Richter, who scored two goals and had four assists last season.
Scouting the Saints (2-1)
Carroll College, located in Helena, Montana, is a member of the Cascade Collegiate Conference in the NAIA. The Fighting Saints are 2-1 so far in 2019, with wins over the University of Saint Katherine (5-1) and San Diego Christian (6-2), and a loss to MacEwan University (2-0).
Makayla Welch leads the way for Carroll, scoring four goals. Katie Martin and Brenna Rohnkohl each have two goals, while Charly Clements has a goal and an assist in 2019. In net, Sydney Green has made all three starts, allowing four goals and making eight saves. Sarah Conway has played 70 minutes for the Saints, allowing one goal.
Scouting the Yellow Jackets
BHSU opened the 2019 season with a pair of one goal losses. The Yellow Jackets opened the year with a 3-2 overtime loss to Dakota Wesleyan. Katie Nielson and Cait Kelly each scored in the game, with Rose Miller and Ella Goodman recording the assists. In the second game of the weekend, Nielson scored her second goal of the year, again on a Miller assist. The Green and Gold held a 1-0 advantage until the 78th minute, at which point Southwest Minnesota State University scored two goals in two minutes to earn the 2-1 win.
Nielson leads the Yellow Jackets with two goals, while Miller leads the squad with two assists. Goalkeeper Teagen Hartley (0-1) has made five saves while allowing three goals, while Dz-Rae Jara (0-1), has allowed two goals and made two saves.

Following this weekend, the Green and Gold open the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule. The Yellow Jackets welcome Fort Lewis on September 20, before playing Adams State at home on September 22.
