Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

SOC: Nielson, Kelly score but BHSU falls in overtime

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Black Hills State University women's soccer team scored late to tie up the game, but ultimately fell in overtime, 3-2, to Dakota Wesleyan on Friday afternoon.

"It is a night and day difference in our team! I'm so proud of these players and how far they've come. We've just started and it's already evident this is our best group yet. They are strong leaders, solid workers, and generous and caring people," said head coach Mike Greco. "It's a tough loss to take, for sure, but there's so much good to take away from the game that we can't complain. The best part is that we care. It hurts because we want a different result. We need to use the hur to fuel us to train and prepare that much more intensely."

The Yellow Jackets (0-1) started the game off on the front foot, recording a shot on goal by Cait Kelly less than two minutes in. The Green and Gold outshot the Tigers (3-1), 6-1, in the first 17 minutes, however, in the 18th minute, DWU scored on their second shot of the match. BHSU continued pounding the shots the rest of the first half, but entered the break trailing by a goal.

The Green and Gold tied up the game early in the second half. In the 51st minute, Rose Miller took a corner kick for the Yellow Jackets. Katie Nielson was waiting in the box and was able to find the back of the net. BHSU dominated possession following the goal, however, in the 84th minute, the Tigers scored on a counterattack to once again gain a one-goal lead. The Yellow Jackets would not be deterred, and responded almost immediately as Ella Goodman assisted Kelly who tallied her first goal of the season in the 87th minute.

Regulation would end with the two teams tied, 2-2. Marissa Dowlin got the first shot off of the period for BHSU, however, in the 94th minute, Josephine Bardsley scored for DWU, securing the victory for the home team.

The Yellow Jackets outshot the Tigers, 29-13, including 12-5 in shots on frame. BHSU took seven corner kicks compared to DWU's one. Nielson led the Green and Gold with seven shots, while Kelly had six. Teagen Hartley (0-1) played all 94 minutes in net, making two saves.

The Green and Gold are back in action on Sunday, September 8, in Marshall, Minnesota. BHSU will play at Southwest Minnesota State University with kickoff scheduled for noon.
