Sawvell Looks to Continue Standout Season at Nationals

Spearfish, SD - Kyla Sawvell will be competing in both the shot put and the weight throw at the D2 NCAA Indoor National Championships. Competing in Birmingham, AL, Sawvell will toss the weight on Friday, March 13th at 3:30pm mountain time. On Saturday, she will throw the shot at 3:45pm mountain time.

Sawvell, just a sophomore, has already had a standout career at BHSU. She was the RMAC outdoor freshman of the year in 2019 after taking second place in the discus, hammer, and shot put. This year, she won both the weight and the shot at the RMAC indoor championships.

Success must just come natural to throwers from Wall, SD, where Sawvell's family farm and ranch is. Those familiar with BHSU track and field will know that the first D2 female national champion, and the second ever in the BHSU history, Madison McLaughlin hailed from Wall.

"I've been following Madison my entire career," said Sawvell. "Her family lives just a mile or so north of mine. My senior year in high school she was my anatomy teacher and was pushing me to go to Black Hills."

Sawvell came into the 2019-2020 season with high goals.

"I wanted to reach the national meet coming into the season. I felt I had unfinished business after last year," said Sawvell. "This year I wanted to push myself harder, improve where I can, and I really listened to Coach Fields as we tweaked things here and there."

"I'm really excited for this whole new experience. It really is an honor. My dream is the podium, but I really want to finish better than what I am ranked and make finals."

The sophomore is an exercise science major and plans to one day return to her home area with the hopes of opening her own PT or Chiropractor business.
