BHSU Cannot Complete Upset, Falls to Mavericks

GOLDEN, Colo. - Black Hills State women's volleyball lost to Colorado Mesa University in four sets Friday night in the Brownson Arena.
 
The Yellow Jackets won set one 25-23, lost set two 25-13, lost set three 25-18, and lost set four 25-22.
 
Mariah Robinson led the Yellow Jackets in kills recording 10 on the night.
 
Karly Marx led the team in assists recording 30.
 
Haedyn Rhoades was the dig leader for BHSU with 18.
 
Bodemann and Ward were dominate at the net recording 7 and 6 block assists, respectively.
 
Kindra Cerrone led the team in aces with four on the night while Katie Welniak and Rhoades each recorded an ace as well.
 
Five Yellow Jackets recording two aces helped lead BHSU to a 25-23 set one victory against the Mavericks Friday night in the Brownson Arena. The Yellow Jackets led the Mavericks in hitting percentage, kills, and blocks in the first set of Friday nights contest. BHSU snagged its first lead of the contest at 7-6 over the Mavericks. BHSU would hold onto the lead until late into the set when CMU would come fighting back tying things up at 21 before the Mavericks would take back the lead 22-21. From that point the Yellow Jackets would outscore the Mavericks 4-1 in route to the set one victory.
 
The Yellow Jackets would lose the momentum early in set two with Mavericks taking an early lead and holding onto it throughout the set. The Mavericks would build their lead up to 20-9 before finishing out the set scoring five to BHSU's four to seal a 25-13 victory over the Yellow Jackets tying the set score at one all.
 
BHSU and the Mavericks stayed close in the third set. With things all locked up at 10 apiece CMU would go on a 7-3 run to take a four-point lead over the Yellow Jackets prompting a BHSU timeout. Out of the timeout CMU would hold onto that lead forcing another BHSU timeout at 22-15 in favor of the Mavericks. Out of that timeout the Yellow Jackets would put up two straight before CMU would outscore BHSU 3-1 to take the set three victory 25-18.
 
CMU came out firing on all cylinders in the fourth set scoring seven unanswered points to open play forcing a BHSU timeout early in the set. Out of the timeout BSHU would earn their first point in the set. Kindra Cerrone would lead the charge after that point dropping three service aces coupled with a pair of kills by Mariah Robinson to get the Yellow Jackets within two (9-7) and force a CMU timeout. Out of the timeout BHSU would outscore CMU 3-1 to knot things up at 10 all. The teams would be tied at 11 and 12 before CMU would snag a slight lead again going up 18-14 over BHSU. The Yellow Jackets would rally to close out the set pacing the Mavericks scoring seven points to the Mavericks seven points before CMU would take the set victory 25-22 and the match victory 4-1.
