Yellow Jackets Stay Competitive, Fall in Five Sets

DURANGO, Colo. – Black Hills State volleyball lost to Fort Lewis College in five sets Saturday afternoon.
 
The Yellow Jackets lost set one (25-19), won set two (25-13), won set three (26-24), lost set four (25-20), and lost set five 15-11.
 
Madison Hoopman led the Yellow Jackets in kills recording 23, just shy of her career best 25.
 
Karly Marx was the assist leader for the Yellow Jackets with 48 assists.
 
Haedyn Rohoades led BHSU on the defensive side of the ball with 18 digs.
 
Three Yellow Jackets recorded two aces apiece including Karly Marx, Haedyn Rhoades, and Kindra Cerrone.
 
Set one got off to a hot start for the Yellow Jackets as they would put up a quick three points to take an early lead 3-1 over the Skyhawks. The Yellow Jackets would string together runs going up by as much as five before Fort Lewis would score four straight points to put the Skyhawks within one. The two teams would stay evenly matched throughout much of the remaining set until the Skyhawks would put together another four-point run to take the lead which they would hold on to through the set winning 25-19 over BHSU.
 
Set two started out strong for the Yellow Jackets with BHSU leading FLC 12-4 early in play. As a team the Yellow Jackets would record a .417 hitting percentage and 12 kills in the set, in route to a 25-13 victory over the Skyhawks tying the match at one set apiece.
 
BHSU came out strong in set three outscoring the Skyhawks 6-3 early in the set. The Yellow Jackets would retain that lead until service errors would get the best of BHSU allowing Fort Lewis to take a 14-9 lead forcing a BHSU time out. Out of the time out the Yellow Jackets would be outscored by the Skyhawks 5-3 causing another BHSU time out with the Yellow Jackets trailing the Skyhawks 19-12. Out of the second time out the Yellow Jackets got hot going on to outscore the Skyhawks 14-5 taking the set three victory 26-24 and taking the lead in sets 2-1.
 
The Yellow Jackets took the lead early in the fourth set leading 6-2 over the Skyhawks. The Skyhawks would put together four scoring runs taking the lead back from the Yellow Jackets at 18-17. From that point from that point the Skyhawks would outscore the Yellow Jackets 7-3 to take the set four victory 25-20 and force a fifth set.
 
Set five opened up close and stayed close throughout much of the set. A three-point run by FLC would put them up 10-8 over BHSU forcing a time out by the Yellow Jackets. Out of the time out BHSU would tie the game at 10 forcing a Skyhawks time out. Out of the time out the Skyhawks would go on to outscore the Yellow Jackets 5-1 taking the set five victory 15-11 and the match victory 3-2.
