DURANGO, COLO. – The Black Hills State women's volleyball team earned its first win of the season Saturday morning against the Fort Lewis Skyhawks 3-1 in four sets.
Sierra Ward and
Madison Hoopman led the team in kills with 14 and nine, respectively.
Haedyn Rhoades led the team in aces with three followed by
Peyton Bodemann with two and
Kindra Cerrone with one.
The first set opened with a 5-0 lead by Fort Lewis as they took a demanding lead that they would not give up throughout the set. As the Jackets warmed up the team was able to begin to switch the momentum in their favor; however, the momentum would not switch fast enough for the Jackets to record an opening set comeback ultimately leading to a 25-14 Fort Lewis victory.
The first set point of the second set would go to the Skyhawks on an ace by Makena Ahuna; however, the Yellow Jackets would answer the ace with two kills from
Kindra Cerrone and
Sierra Ward. The Jackets would go on a handful of scoring runs to ultimately put the set out of reach of the Skyhawks and would win 25-12.
Leading into the third set the Jackets would still have the momentum in their favor as they would open the match going on a 2-8 scoring run. The Jackets would lead by as much as 13 points before the Skyhawks would start their rally pulling within three at 20-23 in favor of the Jackets. Ultimately the Yellow Jackets would put the game away winning 21-25.
Starting out set four the Skyhawks would hold onto the momentum going up 2-0 to start the set. The Skyhawks would hold onto that 2-point lead for much of the fourth set before the Yellow Jackets would take the lead 14-13 for the first time in the set. The Yellow Jackets would only allow the Skyhawks to score two more points throughout the match claiming the 25-15 victory in the set and the 3-1 match victory.
