Black Hills State volleyball opens its season on the road as they compete in the Yellowjacket Invitational presented by Hilton Garden Inn in Billings, Mont. this weekend.
 
The Yellow Jackets will compete in four matchups throughout the weekend with the first contest set for Friday, Sept. 3 at 1 P.M. versus the home team MSU Billings. After a short break the team will then take on Minnesota State University Moorhead at 5 P.M. Next the team will pick up competition taking on Saint Martin's University Saturday morning at 8:00 A.M. and then Bemidji State at 12 P.M. to round out tournament play for the Yellow Jackets.
 
Last season the Yellow Jackets competed in 14 contests going 5-9 overall. BHSU is coming into the 2021 season on a five-game losing streak looking to start the season strong in Billings. The team returns 14 student athletes while welcoming two new student athletes to the fold as well. The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach Kristin Carmichael and Assistant Coach Bree Davis.

Last season the MSU Billings Yellowjackets went 7-1 overall in an unusual season plagued by COVID-19. The Yellowjackets finished out the season on a five-game winning streak after falling to Rocky Mountain College on February 23. The last time BHSU faced off against MSU Billings, BHSU fell in five sets at home on March 14, 2021.

Last season the MSU Moorhead Dragons had their season cancelled. In 2019 however the Dragons went 9-19 overall and finished the season on a four-game losing streak. The last time the Yellow Jackets and the Dragons faced off was September 1, 2018, in a contest which saw the Dragons come out on top winning 3-1 in four sets.

Last season the Saint Martin's Saints competed in six total games going 1-5 overall. After winning their first contest against Seattle Pacific the Saints went on a five-game losing streak to round out a COVID plagued 2020-21 season. This is the first time the Yellow Jackets and the Saints will face off against one another.

Last season the Bemidji State Beavers had their season cancelled due to COVID 19. In 2019 however the Beavers went 7-21 overall and finished the season on a six-game losing streak. The last time the Yellow Jackets and Beavers faced off was in 2011 in a contest that saw the Beavers defeat the Yellow Jackets 3-1 in four sets.
