Yellow Jackets Drop Senior Night Match to #22 Orediggers

SPEARFISH, S.D.- Black Hills State gave the Orediggers all they could handle and were a few bounces away from ending CSM's 36 set win streak. However after 12 ties in the set, BHSU was unable to take the set and then fell in the final two sets to drop in straight sets to the Orediggers. The Yellow Jackets got great performances out of Carsyn Mettler and Alannah Kemmis but just couldn't keep up with the great offense of Colorado School of Mines.

QUICK DETAILS
Score: Black Hills State 0, Colorado School of Mines 3
Team Records: Black Hills State (9-15 (4-8 RMAC)), South Dakota Mines (20-3 (9-2 RMAC))
Attendance: 207

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set was as close of a set BHSU has had all season. Colorado Mines started off hot winning seven of the first ten points to take a 7-3 lead. BHSU was able to cut the lead to two before Mines pushed it back to four at 10-6. The Yellow Jackets won four in a row to tie it at 10 and then won three of the next three of the next five to take a 13-12 lead. Mianna Cardenas, Peyton McLeod, Izabel Abril, Makayla Dorsey, and Zoie Husman each had a kill in that run with Abril having two. After that, no team could pull away. The score tied back up at 13, then remained tied at 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22. Mettler had four kills during that back-and-forth stretch. With the score at 22-22, the Orediggers were finally able to get a few points in a row and take the set at 25-22.
  • CSM also got off fast in set two with a 7-1 lead, but just like the first set, everyone got in on the kill party and helped close Mines' gap to 9-8 with Mettler having two kills. A kill by Abril and a block by McLeod and Husman kept BHSU close at 12-10. Unfortunately, Mines found their groove and won 13 straight points to take the set 25-10.
  • BHSU took the first two points of the third set with a kill by Mettler and a block by Abril and Dorsey. They held the lead at 3-2 and then at 4-3. The Orediggers then won 20 of the next 25 points to take a 23-9 lead. A Mettler kill and an ace by Maddie Altstiel gave BHSU a 3-1 run to make it 24-12, but a kill by CSM gave them the 25-12 set win and the 3-0 match win.
