Box Score 2 LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Black Hills State softball fell to the CCU Cougars on Saturday afternoon, dropping its double header games 2-3 and 2-11.
The Yellow Jackets (5-9, 5-9 RMAC) finished with a total of 13 hits including two home runs, while tallying four runs on the day.
Tyler Whitlock claimed her first home run of the season during game one, going 1-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs.
Gianna Haley would claim the other homer on the day for the Yellow Jackets in game 2, finishing the game 1-1 and a single RBI. This home run marks Haley's second of the season.
Game One (L, 2-3)
The Yellow Jackets started off fast and set themselves up for scoring opportunities in the first inning, thanks to a double from Bell Luebken that helped load the bases. The Yellow Jackets were unable to capitalize on the opportunity, however, and ended the inning with three left on base.
The Cougars would claim the first point of the contest at the bottom of the first, leading 1-0 with no further scoring until the fourth inning.
CCU would score again on a ground-rule double at the bottom of the fourth; however, BHSU responded in the top of the fifth with a two-run score from Whitlock, tying the game at two all.
CCU would clap back to score another home run to take back a 3-2 lead heading into the sixth inning. The Yellow Jackets were unable to convert any runs in the final half-inning of play setting up the final score of 3-2 in favor of the Cougars.
Game Two (L, 2-11)
The second game started slower for both teams as both pitching mounds battled through the first two innings.
CCU would go ahead by the end of the third inning, with a single-point home run and a ground rule double that led to CCU going ahead at 2-0.
The first at bat for the Yellow Jackets in the top of the fourth inning resulted in a home run to right-center field, hit by Gianna Haley, bringing the score to 2-1, in favor of CCU.
The Cougars, however, would respond and score another single homer to take back a 3-1 lead heading into the fifth, before CCU would tack on another run in the bottom of the fifth.
After holding BHSU to just one run at the top of 6, CCU would get hot on offense, tacking on seven more runs before officials signaled for the end of the game.
