Black Hills State Rodeo Brings Home 5 Champions

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. – Black Hills State rodeo traveled to Midplains Community College to compete at North Platte on Sept. 16 and 17.

Women
The women's team finished in first place, taking the lead in the region standings. The team had an amazing weekend across the board taking home the goat tying, breakaway, and all-around buckles, while racking up points in other events as well.

The top point leader for the women's team was senior, Cashae McGee, all-around champion.

In the goat tying, five girls make it to the short round. Freshman Isabel Risse took home the buckle with a 14.1 on two. Junior Riley Donnelly and senior Cashae McGee came in right behind in second place with a 14.5 on two.

Also placing in the average was freshman Emma Ohm who brought home fifth place with a 15.1 on two. Karli Verhulst came into the short round in ninth and put a nice run together, unfortunately, she was out of the average.

In the breakaway, junior Rachel Kelderman won the event with a 5.4 on two. Tatum Carey and Riley Donelly were 2.9 on one.

For the barrel racing, senior Sydney Theobald placed fifth with a 36.26 on two. Cashae McGee was sixth in the long go with an 18.15. Jaycie Habeck and Summer Richardson also competed in the short round.

In the team roping, Jayme Peterson with an 8.9 on one.

Men
The men's team finished in third place, moving them into second in the region, with an outstanding performance over the weekend.

The Yellow Jackets were led by freshman Luke Mavity who came away with the buckle in both the tiedown roping and the all-around. The rest of the team gathered points in their respective events as well.

In the team roping, BHSU was well represented with three men making it back to the Saturday night short go.

Clayton Backhaus, Riley Staton, and Mavity competed against one another with Mavity placing second overall. Backhaus and Staton placed sixth and fourth in the long go, respectively.

BHSU was represented in the steer wrestling as well by Riley Hannum who took fifth place.

Austin Madison of BHSU also placed in the long go of the tie down roping, advancing him to Saturday night's short go.

BHSU travels to Fort Dodge, Iowa this weekend 23 to compete at the Triton Stampede on Sept. 23 and 24.
