Black Hills State University and BHSU Athletics are honoring seven new members and two former teams as the 2023 Hall of Fame Inductee Class.
The individual inductees include five athletes, one coach and one contributor, entering the Hall of Fame alongside the 2007 Men's Cross Country Team and the 2008-09 Men's Basketball Team.
Individuals
Crystal (Hostetter) Huntrods,
Track & Field/Cross Country Athlete
Huntrods was a five-time NAIA All-American, two times in indoor track, two times in outdoor track, and once in cross country. She set school records in the outdoor steeplechase, 5000 meter indoor, and the indoor distance medley relay.
Hallard Jackson III,
Men's Basketball Athlete
Hallard was an NAIA Division II Third Team All-American in men's basketball for the Jackets. He was named conference MVP in 2005-06 while averaging 17.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
David Mickelson,
Football Athlete
Mickelson was an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American offensive tackle in football in 1993. He was an all-conference performer for three years and all-district for two. David started all but the first four games of his freshman year for the jackets.
Jenna (Bachand) Ranek,
Track & Field Athlete
Ranek was a four-time NAIA All-American in track and field, three times in indoor track and field, and one time in outdoor track. Her BHSU records include the indoor triple jump, indoor 4X200 meter relay and 4X400 meter relay.
Shannon (Hellman) Reed,
Track & Field Athlete
Reed was a four-time NAIA All-American and a three-time national champion for BHSU in track and field. She won the indoor 60-meter hurdles in 2008 and the outdoor 100-meter hurdles in 2008 and 2010. Reed set new records in the 60-meter hurdles, 100-meter hurdles, and pentathlon at BHSU and the Dakota Athletic Conference.
Glenn Freeburg,
Coach
Freeburg is noted for his success in volleyball, basketball, and track and field, with an overall record of 1,056 wins. His record includes 25 conference championships, 55 regional championships, 16 state runner-up championships, and nine state championships. In 2014, he was named a finalist for the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Volleyball Coach of the Year.
Kevin Krog,
Contributor
Krog is the past president of the Yellow Jacket Club and was honored as the Booster of the Year in 2013 for his dedication and avid support of BHSU athletics. In 2015, Krog was presented the Sixth Man Award by BHSU men's basketball for his contributions to the team.
Teams
2007 Men's Cross Country Team
Led by coach Scott Walkinshaw, the team finished the highest of any team in school history, earning them NAIA National Champion Runner-Ups. The team also won the conference title and won Region III.
2008-09 Men's Basketball Team
Led by head coach Paul Sather, the team finished the season with a school record 30 wins and 5 losses and advanced to the Final Four in the NAIA National Tournament. The Jackets also captured the Dakota Athletic Conference Championship with an impressive 13-1 record.
