MITCHELL, S.D. – Black Hills State women's soccer scored a school-record six goals in its season opener to defeat Dakota Wesleyan 6-0.
The Yellow Jackets (1-0, 0-0 RMAC) saw five different scorers, with
Jayda Hammer scoring twice while
Kayla Osegueda,
Audrey Sillanpaa,
Sheridan Fenner and
Hailey Warren also found net.
"Today was a great showing of what our vision for BH Soccer is," said Head Coach
John Hutchison. "It was great to get some goals and concede none which is just as important. We were incredibly happy with how we moved the ball and created problems for the opposition. We still have a lot of work to do though to get to where we want to be. We have another great test in the morning."
Osegueda finished with a goal on four shots with three on goal, while Hammer scored twice on three shots, all on goal.
Fenner tallied two shots, both on goal with a goal and an assist while
Lexi Crow also added an assist.
Warren and
Leah Day each finished with two shots on goal, while
Allie Brown,
Sophie Brassard, Samantha Turpin,
Ella Cornelius and
Katy Vinton each had one.
Defensively,
Makayla Dannelly notched a shutout with six saves between the pipes.
Jayda Hammer got the scoring started right away with a penalty kick goal in the seventh minute of the game to give the Yellow Jackets an early 1-0 lead.
BHSU continued to create chances throughout the remainder of the first half, putting up six shots and four on goal over the next 32 minutes before Osegueda extended the Yellow Jacket lead to two with her first goal of the year in the 39th minute.
The Yellow Jackets held a 2-0 lead going into the locker room, tallying 12 shots and nine on goal compared to DWU's four shots and three on goal over the first 45 minutes of soccer.
The second half was all Yellow Jackets, as
Audrey Sillanpaa made it 3-0 in the 50th minute before
Sheridan Fenner and
Hailey Warren both scored just seconds apart during the 61st minute of play to give BHSU a 5-0 lead with under 30 to play.
Hammer added one more goal in the final 10 minutes to make it 6-0 before time expired to seal the victory.
Notes
- Six goals in a single game is a school record, breaking the previous high of four which had been done five times, most recently on Oct. 17, 2021 in a 4-3 victory over N.M. Highlands.
- This is the first time the Yellow Jackets have started a season 1-0 in program history.
