Hammer Goal Lifts Yellow Jackets over Cougars

Black Hills State women's soccer defeated Colorado Christian 1-0 Thursday night to open RMAC play with a win for the third straight season.

The Yellow Jackets (3-3, 1-0 RMAC) tallied 16 shots and seven on goal, but it was Jayda Hammer's shot in the 75th minute that found net to eventually win the game.

Hammer added one more shot to her stat line five minutes after her goal to total a goal on two shots in the game.

Ella Cornelius had three shots on the day with two on goal, while Paige Hill also took three shots including one on goal.

Kayla Truong and Hailey Warren each finished with two shots and one on goal, while Sheridan Fenner, Sophie Brassard and Audrey Sillanpaa also recorded shots.

At keeper, Makayla Dannelly recorded her third shutout on the season and grabbed five saves, including one off of a second-half penalty kick.

The Yellow Jackets applied early pressure on offense, seeing shots on goal from Truong, Hill and Warren in the opening 10 minutes.

Both teams continued to trade shots the rest of the first half, but neither would be able to score as the game entered halftime locked at 0-0 with BHSU accounting for eight shots and four on goal compared to CCU's six shots and three on goal.

The second half got out to a quiet start with both teams trading possessions, before a Yellow Jacket free kick in the 59th minute propelled the team to a pair of close shots from Hill and Cornelius.

BHSU continued knocking at the door as Cornelius booted a shot off the crossbar in the 62nd minute, but the game would roll on, still scoreless.

The Cougars had an opportunity to take a late lead with a penalty kick in the 70th minute, but the ball went straight into Dannelly's arms as she corralled it for the save to maintain the shutout.

Then five minutes later, Hammer broke the scoreless tie with a goal in the 75th minute, drawing the keeper out and heading the ball past her before sinking it into the net with her left foot to put the Yellow Jackets on top, 1-0.

Each team scattered shots in the final few minutes of play, but BHSU was able to hang on and win 1-0.
