CHADRON, Neb. – Momentum looked to be on the side of the Black Hills State University volleyball team as they secured the first two set wins of the night, however they were unable to fend off Chadron State as the Eagles earned the 3-2 reverse sweep win in the Chicoine Center on Friday evening. CSC was able to notch the win with set scores of 21-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-16, and 15-10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Chadron State jumped out to an early 6-3 advantage and eventually 11-7 before Black Hills State began to chip away. Sparked by a kill by Abigail Renner and a service ace by Sydnie Tuioti-Mariner, the Yellow Jackets went on a 6-2 scoring run to even the score at 13 apiece with on kill by Carsyn Mettler. After back-to-back points by the Eagles, BHSU went on to score five unanswered points to take their first lead of the night, building an 18-15 advantage following a CSC attack error. Chadron State strung together a response, tying the score at 19, 20, and 21, before Black Hills State scored four consecutive points to end the frame with a 25-21 win on a Mettler kill.
- After Chadron State took the first point of set two, Black Hills State scored four unanswered to gain a 4-1 advantage. The Eagles trimmed the lead back down to one point (6-5) before a commanding 13-3 scoring run for the Yellow Jackets broke open the scoring in the frame to gain a 19-8 advantage on a kill by Randi Wellhoefer. CSC attempted to make things interesting late with a 9-4 scoring run, however BHSU closed out the frame with a block by Renner to secure the 25-17 set two win and take a 2-0 match lead.
- Black Hills State led by two early in set three on multiple occasions, however it was Chadron State that made the first run with a 5-0 run to take a 12-8 advantage. The Yellow Jackets had an answer with a 7-3 run of their own to even the set at 15 apiece. BHSU would regain the lead on a CSC attack error as the teams went back-and-forth, and eventually led by as many as two late on a pair of occasions, first which was a kill by Emily Freeland to make it 22-20 and then a kill by Mettler to make it 23-21. Chadron State withstood Black Hills State momentum as they closed the frame with four unanswered to extend the match with a 25-23 win in set three and make it a 2-1 match in favor of BHSU.
- Black Hills State took the first two points of set four with kills by Renner and Wellhoefer, however once again Chadron State was the first team to string together a run with a 7-2 scoring run to take a 7-4 advantage. A kill by Tuioti-Mariner and an attack error by the Eagles brought the Yellow Jackets back within one point (7-6), but CSC extended their lead to nine (15-6) with eight unanswered points. The teams momentarily went back-and-forth before three consecutive BHSU points cut the deficit down to six (18-12) before Chadron State answered with three straight of their own to make it a 21-12 score. The Eagles would go on to close out the frame with a 25-16 set four win to send the match to a fifth set.
- A service ace by Renner gave Black Hills State the early 3-1 lead, however Chadron State continued to have the momentum on their side with a 7-2 scoring run to take an 8-5 advantage midway through the frame. The Yellow Jackets would be able to cut the deficit down to two on several occasions, the latest of which was a block by Mettler and Wellhoefer to make it an 11-9 contest, but the Eagles responded by taking four of the last five points to earn the 15-10 set five win and 3-2 reverse sweep victory.
- Chadron State held the advantage in points (80.0-71.0), kills (65-55), aces (8-6), assists (60-53), and digs (93-75), while Black Hills State held the edge in blocks (10-7).
