SPEARFISH, S.D. – Assistant Black Hills State University track and field coach
Matt Cahoon will compete at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon on Friday, June 21 at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
His preliminary round will be held on the 21
st this month at 3:30 p.m. (PT) / 4:30 p.m. (MT). Live results can be found linked above.
"Incredibly grateful for the situation I'm in right now. I've never been to a national caliber meet, so qualifying for the Olympic trials two years out of college is surreal," commented Cahoon. "It feels like a form of confirmation of something I've known was inside of me my whole life, but the journey doesn't stop here."
Cahoon, who just completed his second year of coaching the Yellow Jacket throwers at BHSU, competed himself in the Javelin throw at the USD Early Bird in Vermillion, S.D. this spring, throwing for a distance of 74.34 meters.
Should he qualify for the final round, he would then throw again on Sunday, June 23 at 6:40 p.m. (PT) / 7:40 p.m. (MT).
The USD Early Bird mark was a 5.79-meter improvement than his collegiate-best. It currently sits as the 20
th-best javelin throw in the United States this year.
Cahoon competed collegiately at Samford University (Ala.), throwing his collegiate-best javelin mark of 68.55 meters at the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round in 2021. He graduated from Samford with a degrees in Journalism and Mass Communication.
The U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field will serve as the qualifying event to select Team USA for the Olympic Games Paris 2024, set for July 26 through August 11 in Paris, France. More information about Team USA and the trials can be found linked above.
