Black Hills State Falls on the Road at No. 23 Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Black Hills State University women's soccer team concluded their weekend gauntlet on the road that consisted of a pair of top-25 opponents, dropping a 4-0 decision to No. 23 Colorado Mesa on Sunday afternoon. For just the second time in RMAC play this season the Yellow Jackets were shutout, as the Mavericks controlled the offensive attack of the game with a 23-2 advantage in shot attempts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After four corner kicks and three shot attempts in the first ten minutes, Colorado Mesa struck first in the 12th minute of action as Parker Mairs controlled the ball after Black Hills State cleared it, then she proceeded to place the ball into the top left corner of the net from 25 yards out with her left foot.
  • The Mavericks added to their lead in the 27th minute as Olivia Bariao-Arce fought for control of the ball inside the 8-yard box, then placed the ball into the left side of the net to make it a 2-0 contest.
  • The score remained 2-0 at the halftime break as Karsyn Fraser-Slothower made three saves in the final 20 minutes of action to keep CMU off the board.
  • Colorado Mesa continued their offensive attack in the second half as off a free kick, Sarah Dunn headed the ball to Mairs in the right side of the box, and she then proceeded to fire a shot into the left side of the net to make it 3-0 in the 57th minute.
  • The Yellow Jackets notched their first shot attempt of the contest in the 70th minute as Leah Day placed a shot from approximately 30-yards out towards the left post, where Keely Wieczorek snagged the ball out of the air.
  • The Mavericks scored the final goal of the game in 85th minute as Savannah Miller snuck the ball inside the left post on her corner kick attempt to make it 4-0.
  • On the ensuing kickoff, BHSU saw their second and final shot attempt of the match as a quick attack resulted in Jayda Hammer placing a slow-rolling shot towards the bottom center of the net in the 85th minute.
  • Colorado Mesa held the advantage in shots (23-2), shots-on-goal (9-2), and corner kicks (8-0), while Black Hills State held the edge in saves (5-2).
