Yellow Jackets Drop Match to Cowgirls in RMAC Power Pod Finale

CHADRON, Neb.- The Black Hills State Yellow Jackets fell once again to the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls in a four-set match. BHSU made it to 20 points in three of the four sets but were unable to pull out the comeback and take the second game of the RMAC Power Pod. BHSU actually got solid offensive performances from Emily Freeland and Randi Wellhoefer who combined for 27 kills, and both Elena Atkinson and Sydnie Tuioti-Mariner reached 20 assists. Unfortunately, it was serve/receive where they struggled as they allowed 14 service aces in the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • New Mexico Highlands took each of the first five points to begin the match before each team went on a 3-1 run to make it 9-5. The Cowgirls won three in a row to make it 12-5 and BHSU took five of seven to get the lead back to four at 14-10. Highlands went on another 3-0 run to make it 10-17 before each team split the next 11 points to make it to 22-16. Highlands ended the set on a third 3-0 run to win the set 25-16.
  • BHSU took over the second set with a 7-2 run to begin the set with three kills by Carsyn Metller as well as a block. NMHU completely ended the run with a 5-0 run to tie it at seven. The Green and Gold took a 11-9 lead before the Cowgirls tied it up at 11. BHSU took five of the next nine points to grab a 16-15 lead and shut the door on the set by going on a 8-1 run. Freeland had three kills and a block in the run. Highlands brought it back a little with a 4-0 run to make it 24-20 before Randi Wellhoefer ended it with a kill to tie the match at 1-1.
  • BHSU took a 3-1 lead in the third set and then the Cowgirls took a 7-4 lead with a 6-1 run that included two aces. The Yellow Jackets went on a 7-3 run to take a 12-10 lead when each team split the next six points to make it 15-13. Highlands looked to shut the door on the set with a 7-2 run to make it 20-17 lead. BHSU immediately brought it back with a  5-0 run that included four kills and a block to make it 22-20. However, NMHU immediately shut it down with a 5-0 run to end the set 25-22.
  • The Yellow Jackets started the fourth set with the lead too making it 5-2 after a 4-0 run early. Highlands took the lead on a 9-4 run which brought the score to 11-9. Each team won back-to-back points with BHSU getting a second one to make it 13-13. The Cowgirls won six of the next eight points to take a 19-15 lead before BHSU cut it back to 19-18 with a 3-0 lead. That was the closest they got as neither team put together back-to-back points the rest of the set at Highlands took the set and match on a kill by Arianna Jamerson at 25-22.
