Game Recap: Softball |

BHSU Sweeps Adams State for First RMAC Opening Series Win in Team History

ALAMOSA, COLO. – BHSU had never won an opening RMAC series in team history, nor had they started 4-0, both of those streaks ended today on the back of some of the wildest matchups you will ever see. BHSU went 3-0 today including tying the record for most runs scored by BH in a game with 20 and setting the record for most combined points in team history with 37. Black Hills State was able to ride the back of Laci Peskey (16.2 IP, 5 ERs, 19 Ks, 3 Ws), and Ashlynn Pauwels (6-for-14, 8 RBIs, 4 Runs, HR, BB) in order to keep their four-game winning streak alive.

QUICK DETAILS – SATURDAY GAME 2
Final Score:  Black Hills State 20, Adam State 17
Team Records: Black Hills State 4-4 (2-0 RMAC), UMARY 2-10 (0-2 RMAC)
Pitching Decision: Win: Peskey (4-1), Loss: Davis (2-5)

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
•    In what might be the craziest game in BHSU history, the Yellow Jackets looked like they were going to run away with this early. Lily Simmons led off the game with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tyler Whitlock singled to start the scoring with BHSU taking the early 1-0 lead. After Desi Hernandez also reached base, Carli Maley hit a two RBI single to score both Whitlock and Hernandez to go to 3-0. Fouras reached first on an error and BHSU had bases loaded for Alyssa Wong, who walked in a run to make it 4-0. Freshman Adrianna Lance had her first career hit on a two RBI single, which scored Fouras and Maley. Taylor Dowden would hit a sacrifice fly to score Wong and BH would head to the bottom half up 7-0. However, that lead would not last long as Hoff allowed a single, walk, and BHSU's first home run allowed of the season by Grace Hendrickson, which brought the score to 7-3
•    After Hernandez was hit by a pitch to start the second inning, Ashlynn Pauwels hit her second home run of the series to expand the lead to 9-3. Maley singled and Fouras doubled, and with two outs, Dowden hit a single that scored both and gave BHSU a 11-3 lead. The game was then stopped and postponed to this morning. This immediately started chaos as Adams State had their first five batters reach base in the bottom of the second to bring the score to 11-5. Aubree Davis hit a sac fly to bring it to 11-6 and Hoff was taken out of the game. Malaya Coleman came in and gave up a bases loaded walk to bring the score to 11-7 heading into the third inning.
•    BHSU had their first no-score inning of the game, and Adams State responded by hitting an RBI single two batters in to the frame to make the score 11-8, then they scored two runs on two outs, a pop fly and a fielder's choice, before hitting a double and a single to score two more and take their first lead of the series at 12-10.
•    BHSU immediately answered in the fourth with two outs, Wong walked, Lance reached on  a fielder's choice that didn't get Wong out, Dowden walked to make bases loaded, and Simmons hit a two RBI single to score Lance and Wong and tie the game at 12. Whitlock would single to bring the bases loaded again, then Hernandez hit a two-RBI single to score Simmons and Dowden, before Pauwels hit a two-RBI triple to score Hernandez and Whitlock and BHSU took a 17-12 lead scoring six runs with two outs. Just when you thought it would be enough, BHSU allowed a triple and a double to start the bottom half, and Adams State brought it to 17-13 Hendrickson and Davis both doubled to score two more runs and send it into the fifth at 17-15.
•    For the first time all game, no runs were scored in the fifth inning and so it would head to the sixth at 17-15.
•    BHSU had bases loaded in the sixth, but a Gracie Oswald strikeout ended the chance to score, and so Adams State jumped on the opportunity by scoring two runs off a bases loaded walk and sacrifice fly to tie the game at 17. Laci Peskey would be brought in to pitch and got out of the inning.
•    With two outs and one on in the seventh, BHSU would turn to Hernandez, who hit a single to score Simmons, and then ASU's infield would give up two errors to allow both Hernandez and Pauwels to score giving BHSU a 20-17 lead heading into the final frame. Peskey would go out on to the mound and hold the Grizzlies to their first 1-2-3 inning of the game to give BHSU the win in what was the highest scoring game in BHSU softball history. The 20 runs tied a BHSU record for most runs scored in a game with a game also versus Adams State in 2017.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
•    After the crazy offensive game this morning, this game never looked like that. BHSU started the scoring off in the second inning after Peskey struck out the side to begin the game, when Fouras hit her first home run of the season to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead. Peskey went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the second.
•    There were no runs or really any action until the sixth inning, when Pauwels led off with a single. Wong was hit by a pitch, which brought up Fouras again, who hit a two RBI double to give BHSU a 3-0 lead. After Katelyn Jarzobski grounded out, Dowden hit a two-out single to score Fouras and give BHSU a 4-0 lead. Peskey once again struck out the side in the sixth giving the pitcher her third double-digit strikeout game this season.
•    In the top of the seventh, Hernandez would single, and Wong would hit a two-out double to score her and give BHSU a bigger cushion at 5-0, however, when Peskey was pitching like she was, you only need a one-run lead as she nearly went 1-2-3 to give BHSU it's third straight win over Adams State at 5-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED- GAME 2
•    BHSU had their first two batters reach base, but both were thrown out at second. So, with two outs, Hernandez, Pauwels, and Maley each hit singles to score one run and take a 1-0 lead early.
•    Each team would have a lot of baserunners in the second inning, but neither team could score leaving the bases loaded in each frame.
•    BHSU couldn't do anything in the top of the third, but Adams State had a leadoff single and saw that runner score on a double by Emily Sauvageau and tie the game at 1-1.
•    No team was able to score until the sixth inning when BHSU was able to get the bases loaded with two outs for Pauwels, who hit a bases-clearing double to bring the score to 4-1. Pauwels would advance home from a Wong single and BHSU would head to the bottom of the sixth up 5-1. However, it couldn't be that easy. Peskey also loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth and allowed one to score on a sacrifice fly, another to score on a single, and two more to score on a bases-clearing triple by Kaylee Eyl, and the score was tied at 4-4. Neither team scored in the seventh, so we headed to extras for the first time this year.
•    Simmons walked to begin extras before advancing to third on a sacrifice groundout. Hernandez hit a sac fly to advance Simmons and give BHSU a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. Makenzie Simon hit a double off Peskey to begin the bottom frame, and a groundout advanced her to third. Peskey would respond by striking out the next two ASU batters to give BHSU a 6-5 win and their first 4-0 conference start in team history and first opening RMAC series win in team history.
