Boyd and Sartain Run to School Records in La Verne and Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Black Hills State University men's and women's track & field teams saw a pair of school records fall in two different time zones on Friday afternoon, starting with a new top mark in the men's 100m dash by Mason Sartain at the Bauer Open and followed by the fastest women's 5,000m run by Evie Boyd at the ULV Leopard Invitational. Along with the pair of school records, three additional individuals and one relay found themselves a spot on the Yellow Jacket All-Time Performance List.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – MEN'S TRACK & FIELD AT BAUER OPEN
  • Beginning the day on the track with a second place finish was the 4x100 relay team of Jace Johnson, Ashley Williams, Jude Guevara, and Mason Sartain who improved upon their time last week by 0.06 seconds and now hold the seventh-fastest time in program history at 42.29 seconds.
  • Addison Red Fox ran to a winning time of 4:04.00 in the 1,500m run, while Marcos Valerio was fourth with a time of 4:13.83.
  • Crossing the finish line second in the 100m hurdles was Jayden Curtis as he notched a career-best time of 15.68.
  • Securing the win in the 400m dash was Drew Lehman, winning by less than half a second as he crossed the line in a career-best time of 50.32.
  • The Yellow Jackets took four of the top-6 place finishes in the 100m dash, led by a career-best and school record time of 10.76 seconds by Sartain to secure the victory in the event. Close behind with another career-best and the third-fastest time in school history was Johnson as he clocked a 10.82. Rounding out the top-6 was Williams with a career-best time of 11.17 for fifth place and Guevara with a time of 11.20 for sixth place. Also competing in the event for BHSU was Isaac Job who finished 12th with a time of 11.80.
  • Caden Strasser earned the narrow win in the 800m run with a time of 1:57.30 at O'Harra Stadium. Adding a top-5 finish in the event was Valerio who clocked a time of 2:05.99 for fifth place.
  • Running to a career-best time of 54.39 in the 400m hurdles and moving up the school's all-time top-10 to No. 7 was Flynn Johnston as he notched his first individual collegiate event win.
  • Johnson sprinted to the win in the 200m dash with a career-best time of 21.94, tying the fifth-fastest time in program history. Also adding top-5 finishes was Sartain in third with a time of 22.29 and Lehman in fourth with a time of 22.75. Rounding out the quartet of Yellow Jackets competing was Job with a time of 24.52 for 11th place.
  • Ryan Baker was the highest finishing of four BHSU athletes in the hammer throw, posting a fourth place finish with a mark of 46.11m (151' 3"). Also competing in the event was Logan Class with a fifth place throw of 45.93m (150' 8"), Anthony Rosenstrauch with a sixth place mark of 43.46m (142' 7"), and Canyon Burkard with an eighth place and career-best mark of 40.97m (134' 5").
  • The lone Black Hills State athlete competing in the shot put, Rosenstrauch posted a throw of 12.49m (40' 11.75") for seventh place in the event.
  • Curtis earned a second place finish in the long jump, recording a mark of 6.50m (21' 4"). Also earning a top-5 mark in the event was Javin Walker with a jump of 6.17m (20' 3") for fourth place, while Casen Willson earned a top-10 finish with a jump of 5.59m (18' 4.25") for seventh place.
  • The pair of Willson and Walker posted top-5 finishes in the triple jump, recording marks of 13.09m (42' 11.5") and 12.76m (41' 10.5") for third and fifth place respectively. Willson's jump set a new career-best mark in the event.
  • The lone pole vaulter in action for the Yellow Jackets, Shane Karajanis posted a third place finish as he cleared a height of 4.15m (13' 7.25").

HOW IT HAPPENED – MEN'S TRACK & FIELD AT BRYAN CLAY INVITATIONAL
  • Recording a career-best time of 4:00.40 in the 1,500m run at the Cougar Athletic Stadium on Friday morning, Jonah Rigg ran to a 48th place finish. Competing in a field of 77 student-athletes he notched a faster time than ten NCAA Division I runners.

  • Jaxon Straus ran to the tenth-fastest time in school history in the 5,000m run, crossing the finish line 15th with a career-best time of 14:47.14. In a field of 81 athletes, he bested ten NCAA Division I runners.
HOW IT HAPPENED – WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD AT BAUER OPEN
  • In their first event of the day on the track, the Yellow Jackets took four of the top-5 place finishes in the 1,500m run. Leading the way was the pair of Alexis Weiers and Sierra Hopp who notched times of 5:08.92 and 5:09.35 for second and third place respectively. Next to cross the finish line was Gracie Craig in fourth with a time of 5:14.82 and Kadence Baun in fifth with a time of 5:33.82. Hopp ran to a career-best time in the event.
  • Scoring her second victory in the 100m hurdles of the outdoor season with a winning time of 17.07 was Lauryn Bennett.
  • BHSU swept the top-3 placings in the 400m dash, highlighted by a victory by Saraya Afrank with a time of 1:00.17. Finishing second with a career-best time of 1:00.40 was Carlie DeBoer and third with a career-best time of 1:01.71 was Gracie Wilts.
  • Posting a second place finish in the 100m dash with a time of 12.83 was Alessandra Broussard. Also competing and notching a time of 13.76 for sixth place was Alivia Weathers.
  • Led by a 1-2 finish by Jillian Brennan with a time of 2:20.39 and Norah Entzi with a time of 2:23.08, the Green & Gold scored five top-10 finishes in the 800m run. Rounding out the five Yellow Jackets in the event was Brooklyn Brooks in fifth with a time of 2:25.73, Morgan Sumption in sixth with a time of 2:30.17, and Baun in tenth with a time of 2:44.18.
  • The trio of Afrank, Wilts, and DeBoer collected top-5 finishes in the 200m dash. Afrank, who tied the tenth-fastest time in program history, clocked a winning and career-best time of 25.61, while Wilts was third with a career-best time of 26.99 and DeBoer was fifth with a time of 27.33.
  • Rounding out the day on the track, Katie Turpin and Payton Sheehan notched a 1-2 finish in the 3,000m steeplechase with times of 12:50.68 and 13:03.65.
  • Isabell Higgins led a trio of Yellow Jackets in the top-10 of the hammer throw on Friday, recording a winning and career-best throw of 44.89m (147' 3"). Finishing sixth with a career-best mark of 39.55m (129' 9") was Elissa Kip and ninth with a throw of 35.55m (116' 7") was KyleeJo Symonds.
  • Christianna Wall and Symonds secured top-5 finishes in the shot put, posting throws of 11.46m (37' 7.25") and 10.84m (35' 6.75") for fourth and fifth place respectively. Also competing in the event was Kipp who posted a seventh place mark of 10.79m (35' 4.75").
  • Earning a sixth place and top-10 finish in the javelin throw, Cassidy Goddard notched a mark of 30.10m (98' 9") to lead a trio of Yellow Jackets in her collegiate debut in the event. Finishing just outside of the top-10 was Wall in 11th with a throw of 25.19m (82' 7") and Broussard in 13th with a mark of 23.88m (78' 4").
  • Weathers and Erin Weibel each cleared a height of 1.40m (4' 7") for a top-5 finish in the high jump. Weathers recorded the jump on her first attempt for fourth place, while Weibel posted the career-best mark on her second attempt for fifth place.
  • It was a 1-2-3 finish for BHSU in the pole vault, led by Weibel and Brekkan Lockhart who each cleared 3.40m (11' 1.75") for first and second respectively, while Gretchen Adamski notched a third place finish with a jump of 3.25m (10' 8"). Rounding out the top-5 in the event was Bennett with a mark of 3.10m (10' 2").

HOW IT HAPPENED – WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD AT BRYAN CLAY INVITATIONAL
  • Representing the Yellow Jackets in the 1,500m run in Azusa, Katelyn Krieger ran to a career-best time of 4:42.31 but just missed a spot on the on the program's all-time top-10 list by just 0.09 seconds. In a field of 179 athletes, her 119th place finish bested 34 NCAA Division I runners.
HOW IT HAPPENED – WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD AT MT. SAC RELAYS
  • Kendall Tietjan saw a 2.54 second improvement from her time at yesterday's Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in the 400m hurdles, clocking a time of 1:01.59 to come within just 0.22 seconds from her career-best time that sits second in school history. She finished 20th in a field of 32 student-athletes, besting ten of the 29 NCAA Division I competitors.
HOW IT HAPPENED – WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD AT ULV LEOPARD INVITATIONAL
  • Surpassing her current teammate in the record books, Evie Boyd tallied a school record time of 17:22.89 in the 5,000m run on Friday evening. As she clocked her career-best time in a field of 65 athletes she bested 17 NCAA Division I runners.
  • Also competing in 5,000m run in La Verne was Emma Hofmeister, who came within 2.75 seconds of a new career-best time as she clocked an 18:17.97 for 27th place. She ran a faster time than ten NCAA Division I athletes in the race.

The mid-distance and distance crews for the Black Hills State track & field teams will conclude their west coast trip on Saturday, April 19, as Braden Anderson will compete in the 800m run at the Mt. SAC Relays and Emma Hofmeister, Jonah Rigg, and Katelyn Krieger will take part in 1,500m run at the Beach Invitational.
