SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University men's and women's track & field teams made the most of the home weekend at Lyle Hare Stadium, closing out the Scott Walkinshaw Open & Multi with 19 event wins and eight new marks on the programs all-time top-10 lists. On the men's side seven different Yellow Jackets secured a victory, while the biggest moment of the day came as
Mason Sartain posted the second-fastest time in program history in the 100m dash. On the women's side, eight different athletes earned a first place finish, including
Katelyn Krieger who notched a pair in the 800m run and the 1,500m run. The top moment of the day in the women's events occurred in the 5,000m run as
Sylvia Brown clocked the second-fastest time in school history.
HOW IT HAPPENED – MEN'S TRACK & FIELD
- Landrum Wiley recorded a win in the 3,000m steeplechase, posting a career-best time of 9:52.65 to pace the field. Then collecting a fifth place finish was Alberto Spotted, who crossed the finish line in 10:18.04 in his collegiate debut in the event.
- The 4x100 relay team of Landon Scalise, Jace Johnson, Jude Guevara, and Mason Sartain bested their previous top time of the outdoor season, clocking a time of 41.73 for second place in the event and ranking fourth all-time in program history.
- The Yellow Jackets took two of the top-3 place finishers in the men's 1,500m run, highlighted by an event victory by Jonah Rigg as he ran to a career-best time of 4:00.57. Notching a third place finish in the event was Addison Red Fox who posted a career-best time of his own at 4:02.50.
- The Green & Gold sent four athletes to the finals of the 100m dash, starting with the third-fastest prelim time and new career-best time of 10.83 for Johnson, the fourth-fastest prelim time of 10.87 for Sartain, the seventh-fastest prelim and career-best time of 11.17 for Ashley Williams, and the eighth-fastest prelim and career-best time of 11.17 for Isaac Job. In the finals Sartain finished third with a career-best time of 10.81, Johnson finished fourth and matched his time of 10.83, and Job finished sixth with a time of 11.62. The times at Lyle Hare Stadium caused movement among the all-time top-10 times in program history, as Sartain's 10.81 finals time ranks second and Johnson's 10.83 is tied for third.
- The lone Yellow Jacket competing in the 110m hurdles, Conor McGraw, tied for fourth place with a time of 16.24.
- Leading the way with a winning time of 1:59.16 in the 800m run, Drew Lehman helped Black Hills State take three of the top-4 places in the event. Turning in a second place finish with a time of 1:59.87 was Caden Strasser and notching a fourth place finish with a time of 2:05.50 was Rigg.
- The trio of Johnson, Sartain, and Guevara, recorded top-10 finishes in the 200m dash with times of 22.25 for fifth place, 22.87 for eighth place, and 22.89 for ninth place respectively. Guevara's time set a new career-best time in the event.
- Jaxon Straus and Turner Christians notched a 1-2 finish in the 5,000m run with times of 15:13.43 and 15:35.99. Also earning a top-5 finish was David Standish with a fifth place finish and time of 16:02.17, while other BHSU competitors were Marcos Valerio in seventh with a time of 16:14.42 and Wyatt Ostler in 12th with a time of 16:59.23.
- The duo of Anthony Rosenstrauch and McGraw notched an eighth and tenth place finish in the shot put, recording marks of 12.60m (41' 4.25") and 12.37m (40' 7") respectively. Rosenstrauch's mark set a new career-best in the event.
- BHSU took four top-5 marks in the long jump, led by a second place finish by Bridger Anderson with a jump of 6.70m (21' 11.75"). Also competing was Seth Wilson who clinched a third place finish with a jump of 6.52m (21' 4.75"), Javin Walker who earned a fourth place finish with a career-best jump of 6.48m (21' 3.25"), and Casen Willson who was fifth place with a jump of 5.72m (18' 9.25").
- Barren Yellow Bird was the top Yellow Jacket in the javelin, posting a career-best throw of 46.25m (151' 9") for fourth place. McGraw and Logan Class notched a sixth and seventh place finish with marks of 43.48m (142' 8") and 41.39m (135' 9").
- Ryan Baker tallied a victory in the discus throw with a mark of 43.76m (143' 7"), leading a 1-2 finish as Rosenstrauch collected a second place finish with a mark of 43.23m (141' 10"). Also earning spots in the top-10 were Canyon Burkard with a career-best throw of 38.83m (127' 4") for sixth place and Class with a throw of 37.54m (123' 2") for eighth place.
- Chase Maher earned his second consecutive win in the pole vault and fourth of the 2024-25 season (indoor & outdoor) as he cleared 4.70m (15' 5") on Sunday afternoon. Also competing and earned a third place finish in the event was Shane Karajanis as he cleared 4.25m (13' 11.25").
- Trennan Pearson earned his third high jump win of the season (first of the outdoor season), as he cleared a height of 1.89m (6' 2.25"). Additionally, McGraw, who posted a mark of 1.80m (5' 10.75") earned a third place finish.
- The highest finishing Yellow Jacket in the men's triple jump was Jayden Curtis who tallied a mark of 15.43m (50' 7.5") for second place. Close behind Curtis in third place was Walker with a career-best jump of 12.85m (42' 2"). Rounding out the top-5 of the event was Willson with a jump of 12.70m (41' 8").
HOW IT HAPPENED – WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
- Alivia Weathers maintained her lead in the heptathlon that she had built on day one and went on to secure the win in the event on Sunday morning. While tallying 3,906 points throughout the weekend, she added a win in the javelin throw with a mark of 36.81m (120' 9") and a third place finish in the long jump with a mark of 4.79m (15' 8.75").
- Also competing in the heptathlon, Alessandra Broussard fell one spot on the final day as she finished fourth overall with 3,405 points in her collegiate debut in the event. On Sunday morning she added a second place finish in the 800m run with a career-best time of 2:48.38 and a third place finish in the javelin throw with a mark of 29.52m (96' 10").
- The Yellow Jackets took home a first and third place finish in the 3,000m steeplechase as Evie Boyd cruised to a win with a time of 11:24.39 in her first time competing in the event in her collegiate career, even ranking No. 10 on the Yellow Jacket All-Time Performance List. Collecting the third place finish in the event was Katie Turpin who ran to a time of 13:15.36 on the day.
- Katelyn Krieger led a trio of BHSU athletes in the 1,500m run, pacing the field with a time of 4:50.71 for her first win of the day. Adding a top-3 finish was Gracie Craig who crossed the finish line with a career-best time of 5:14.8, while also competing was Kadence Baun who turned in a seventh place finish and time of 5:39.93 in her first collegiate appearance in the event.
- The duo of Lauryn Bennett and Weathers went 1-2 in the 100m hurdles, clocking times of 17.67 and 17.74 respectively.
- Krieger earned her second event victory of the day with a time of 2:21.95 in the 800m run, while Norah Entzi and Morgan Sumption added a third and fourth place finish respectively with times of 2:23.23 and 2:28.28.
- Securing the win in the 400m hurdles was Charlie DeBoer, who posted a career-best and the fifth-fasted time in school history with a time of 1:04.27.
- Another 1-2 finish for the Yellow Jackets came in the 5,000m run as Sylvia Brown collected the win, a career-best outdoor time, and improved the second-best time in school history to 17:29.66, while Emma Hofmeister also clocked a career-best outdoor time of 18:21.12 for second place. Earning a fourth place finish in the event was Abigail Robberson with a career-best time of 18:46.28, and Sierra Hopp was sixth with a career-best time of 19:04.62.
- Isabel Higgins led a quartet of Black Hills State throwers in the shot put, recording a mark of 12.14m (39' 10") for third place. Adding top-10 finishes was Christianna Wall with a mark of 11.43m (37' 6") for sixth place, Cassidy Goddard with a mark of 10.50m (34' 5.5") for eighth place, and KyleeJo Symonds with a mark of 9.87m (32' 4.75") for tenth place. Elissa Kipp also recorded a throw of 8.95m (29' 4.5") for 12th place in the event.
- The pair of Jada Guptill and Wall recorded throws of 25.65m (84' 2") and 22.95m (75' 3") respectively for seventh and ninth place finishes in the javelin. Guptill set a new career-best mark in the event.
- Goddard led a trio of BHSU athletes in the top-5 of the discus, notching a throw of 38.43m (126' 1") for second place in the event. Rounding out the top-5 of the event was Wall who was fourth with a career-best mark of 36.30m (119' 1") and Higgins who was fifth with a mark of 35.86m (117' 8").
- Brekkan Lockhart and Erin Weibel shared the top spot atop the pole vault standings at the end of the day, each clearing 3.50m (11' 5.75"), a mark which ranks seventh in program history. For Lockhart it was a new career-best, while for Weibel it was a new outdoor career-best mark. Also competing in the event was Gretchen Adamski who earned third place with a mark of 3.35m (10' 11.75"), Hope Bryant who earned fifth place with a career-best mark of 3.05m (10' 0"), and Lauryn Bennett who earned sixth place with a mark of 2.75m (9' 0.25").

Next weekend will be a split weekend for the Black Hills State track & field teams as decathlon and heptathlon athletes will compete at the Bryan Clay Multis in Azusa, California on Thursday, April 10, and Friday, April 11, while the rest of the team will compete at the Jim Duncan Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday.
