Yellow Jackets Finish Fifth in Augustana Spring Invite as They Continue Strong Spring

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Yellow Jackets continue to produce a strong spring as they kept the momentum from their 36-hole program record in Arizona going in Sioux Falls at the Augustana Spring Invite. BHSU once again produced a top three 36-hole record, while shooting nine shots closer to par than they did in Arizona with an 657 (+81). That performance puts them third all time in the D2 era and with the conditions, it may be the best round of golf this team has played in the Doran era. After 36 holes in one day, BHSU finished fifth at Elmwood Golf Course and beat seven other teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Katie Jorgenson was the top dog for BHSU today. After struggling down in Arizona, she bounced back in a big way, especially in the first 18 holes today. Jorgenson finished in a tie for 22nd with an 18-hole score of 162 (+18). She started her day off by shooting a 77 (+5) in round one that put her in a tie for fourth going into the second 18 holes. She did not make worse than bogey today and added a birdie on her second to last hole of #18 along with ten pars to put together that solid round that included a 38 (+2) on the front nine. She then followed it up with an okay round on the second 18 with an 85 (+13) to fall down to a tie for 22nd. She only had one birdie and one par on the front nine in round two, but had six pars on the back nine.
  • Shelbi Gardner finished just one stroke behind Jorgenson at 163 (+19) in a tie for 24th and tied for second on the BHSU team. Gardner had a lot more consistent of a 36-hole day shooting 81 (+9) on the first 18 and 82 (+10) on the second 18. She also did not shoot worse than a 41 (+5) on any of the four nines today making eight pars and one birdie in the first round and making nine pars and a birdie on the second round.
  • Olivia McCandless had a massive round two that led to her finishing tied with Shelbi Gardner at 163 (+19) and in a tie for 24th. After shooting a 84 (+12) with seven pars on the first round, she bounced back in the second round starting it off by going +3 in her first ten holes. After a rough patch on 14 and 15, McCandless got back in rhythm and went +1 on her final five holes to shoot a 79 (+7) in round two, including a 37 (+1) on the front nine to fly up the leaderboard into the top 25.
  • Abbi Beld was next on the team as she finished in 39th place with a 36-hole score of 169 (+25). Beld had a great front nine in the opening 18. She had a 39 (+3) on that nine before putting up a rough 48 (+12) on the back nine. This led her to shoot an 87 (+15) on the first 18 in which she had six pars with all of them coming on the front nine. She bounced back nicely on the second round, where she put up a 39 (+3) again on the front nine, before dropping five shots from the first round on the back nine here shooting a 43 (+7) to take an 18-hole score of 82 (+10).
  • Leyni Stavola came in fifth for the Yellow Jackets, but still put up a respectable 172 (+28) over the two rounds and finished tied for fourth on the team in both rounds and in a tie for 42nd in the tournament. In round one, she made seven pars, which led to her getting an 87 (+15) before she turned it around and lowered her score on the second nine shooting 85 (+13) with seven pars. She continues to lower her average score.
