Boyd Notches School Record, Adamski Adds NCAA Provisional Mark at Grubby’s Easter Classic

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Black Hills State University men's and women's track & field teams traveled down I-90 to South Dakota Mines' O'Harra Stadium to compete in the Grubby's Easter Classic this past Saturday. The Yellow Jacket women's squad earned the team win with 164 total points, highlighted by a school record performance by Evie Boyd in the 5,000m run and an NCAA Provisional mark in the pole vault by Gretchen Adamski. On the men's side, the Green & Gold finished second as a team with 179 total points and were highlighted by Ryan Baker notching the seventh-best hammer throw mark in program history. BHSU tallied 11 event victories and 17 career-best marks and times during the meet.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – MEN'S TRACK & FIELD
  • The lone Yellow Jacket to run in the 100m dash was Jude Guevara, who clocked a season-best and winning time of 11.33.
  • Flynn Johnston notched a second place finish in the 400m dash, running to a career-best time of 49.75, while Logan Boyd earned a top-10 finish by running a 54.19 for sixth place.
  • In the 800m run, Caden Strasser notched a top-5 finish, clocking a 1:57.94 for third place, while Levi Smith added a seventh place finish and time of 2:06.16.
  • With nine Yellow Jackets running in the 1,500m run, the trio of Landrum Wiley, Jaxon Straus, and Gavin Kuhlenbeck swept the top-3 places with times of 4:01.00, 4:02.03, and 4:02.71 respectively. The Green & Gold then secured an additional five top-10 finishes, with Thomas Oylear notching a fifth place finish and time of 4:05.55, Anthony Ackerman running to a sixth place time of 4:08.86, Alberto Spotted running to a seventh place time of 4:09.82, Conor Phipps running to an eighth place time of 4:13.31, and Emmett Swartzentruber running to a ninth place time of 4:14.66. Rounding out the group was Levi Smith who posted a time of 4:17.27 for 12th place. For Wiley, Kuhlenbeck, Oylear, Spotted, Phipps, and Swartzentruber, it was their first time competing in the event collegiately. For Ackerman his time marked a new career-best.
  • Another large group of Yellow Jackets took the track in the 5,000m run, with a total of ten competing in the event. The Green & Gold saw the first eight runners cross the finish line before an opposing athlete, as Wiley led the way with a winning time of 14:59.21, Kuhlenbeck finished second with a time of 15:02.98, Turner Christians finished third with a career-best time of 15:11.70, Dominic Eberle finished fourth with a time of 15:15.86, Straus finished fifth with a time of 15:17.97, Oylear finished sixth with a career-best time of 15:19.13, Swartzentruber finished seventh with a career-best time of 15:23.74, and Ackerman finished eighth with a time of 15:25.43. Rounding out the top-10 was Sean Shipp with a time of 15:46.96 for tenth place and Spotted was 16th with a time of 16:00.95. For Eberle and Ackerman it was their collegiate debut in the 5,000m run.
  • In the pole vault, Jeremy Harms captured a third place finish by clearing 4.15m (13' 7.25").
  • Notching a win in the long jump was Javin Walker, who recorded a mark of 6.51m (21' 4.25"). Adding top-5 finishes were Seth Wilson and Guevara, who posted marks of 6.15m (20' 2.25") for third and 5.98m (19' 7.5") for fourth place respectively. Guevara's mark of 5.98m set a new career-best in the event.
  • Casen Willson secured a second place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 13.02m (42' 8.75"), while Walker and Guevara added top-5 finishes with jumps of 12.43m (40' 9.5") for fourth and 11.86m (38' 11") for fifth place.
  • The lone thrower in the shot put, Matthew LoFaso posted a top-10 finish with a mark of 13.02m (42' 8.75") for sixth place.
  • Ryan Baker earned the win in the discus, recording a mark of 44.89m (147' 3") for first place.
  • Baker notched a third place finish in the hammer throw with a career-best mark of 53.78m (176' 5") to move into seventh all-time in program history in the event. Also, in the event LoFaso and Barren Yellow Bird added top-10 finishes with throws of 41.31m (135' 6") for sixth place and 40.11m (131' 7") for seventh place respectively. LoFaso's throw of 41.31m marked a new career-best in the event.
  • Casen Willson notched a fourth place finish in the javelin throw, recording a mark of 43.83m (143' 9"), while Yellow Bird and Seth Wilson added top-10 marks of 37.22m (122' 1") and 34.80m (114' 2") for sixth and eighth place respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED – WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
  • Abigail Hardersen notched a victory in the 800m run, clocking a time of 2:28.01, while Payton Sheehan posted a career-best time of 2:37.64 for a fourth place finish.
  • The Yellow Jackets swept the top-3 places in the 1,500m run, with Emma Hofmeister crossing the finish line in a winning time of 4:49.48, Hardersen recorded a career-best time of 4:59.39 for second place, and Alyssa Brandt notched a time of 5:05.99 for third place in her season debut. The freshman duo of Nicole Clark and Ava Allen collected top-10 finishes with times of 5:08.66 and 5:09.87 for sixth and seventh place respectively. For Clark it was a new career-best and for Allen it was her collegiate debut in the event. Sheehan rounded out the group with an 11th place finish with a time of 5:26.15.
  • Black Hills State also swept the top-4 placings in the 5,000m run, highlighted by a school record performance by Evie Boyd, crossing the finish line in a career-best and winning time of 17:14.89. In second place Abigail Robberson added a career-best time of 18:02.70, while Mason Berg ran a third place time of 18:18.66 and Sierra Hopp clocked a career-best time of 18:26.37 for fourth place.
  • Madyson Wolfe secured the victory in the 100m hurdles, posting a winning time of 15.87, while Lauryn Bennett added a fourth place finish with a time of 17.34.
  • In her debut in the event, Jacey Wipf clocked a time of 13:37.22 for second place.
  • One of the top women's pole vault squads in the country continued their dominance with a 1-2-3 finish, highlighted by an NCAA Provisional mark by Gretchen Adamski as she cleared a height of 3.80m (12' 5.5") for the victory to move into a tie for fifth place all-time in program history in the event. Brekkan Lockhart matched a season-best mark of 3.50m (11' 5.75") for second place as she remained tenth all-time in school history. Rounding out the trio was Hope Bryant who matched a career-best mark of 3.35m (10' 11.75") for third place.
  • The lone Yellow Jacket in the shot put, Hanah Sullivan recorded a mark of 12.55m (41' 2.25") for second place.
  • Winning the discus with a mark of 41.58m (136' 5") was Cassidy Goddard, while Sullivan added a third place finish with a throw of 37.50m (123' 0").
  • Goddard notched another event victory in the hammer throw, recording a career-best mark of 50.82m (166' 9") for first place and to move into sixth place all-time in program history. Sullivan added a third place finish with a toss of 46.65m (153' 1").
  • Goddard added a fifth place finish in the javelin with a throw of 29.96m (98' 3"), while Erin Weibel added a career-best mark of 26.68m (87' 6") for ninth place.

Black Hills State men's and women's track & field are back in action on Wednesday, April 8, as schedule changes moved up the Mines Midweek & Multi meet at the Stermole Track & Field Complex in Golden, Colorado. Field events begin at 9:30 a.m., while multi events begin at 12:30 p.m., and at 4:20 p.m. is the start of track events.
