Yellow Jackets Fall in Pair of One-Run Games to Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Yellow Jackets came very close to grabbing two wins today, but fell just short in both losing each game by one run with a 2-1 pitcher's duel in game one and a 10-9 offensive battle in game two. Mesa kept crawling back in game two scoring nine unanswered to take that matchup. BHSU was able to get great performances from Kaitlyn Geschwill and Jessica Melendez, but were unable to grab a win on day one.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • In the top of the third inning, Carly Reyes Mims led off the inning with a single and stole second base. She would score on a one-out single by Desi Hernandez to give BHSU a 1-0 lead early.
  • Kaitlyn Geschwill had a no-hitter going into the fourth inning, until Allison Lindsay hit a one-out double. She was pinch ran for by Lacie Rodabaugh, who advanced to third on a single by April Neill. CMU tied the game on a single by Makayla Westmoreland to make it 1-1.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Neill singled to right, and a sacrifice bunt got her to second. Kubitscheck hit a single and no one advanced but then another single by Ava Stephens scored Neill to give Mesa a 2-1 lead, which was all they would need as they would go 1-2-3 in the seventh to end the game and get them a win.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • BHSU started the scoring early with three straight singles to begin the top of the first inning from Carly Reyes Mims, Jessica Melendez, and Sammie Kaufman-Warner to make it 1-0. Melendez scored on a wild pitch to move Kaufman-Warner to third, and she scored on a two-out single from Caylee Mann to make it 3-0 early.
  • Mesa answered back in the bottom of the first when Molli Magaña singled to leadoff the bottom of the first. After two straight swinging strikeouts, Neill singled to move Magana to second and Westmoreland doubled to score Magaña and make it 3-1.
  • The flood gates opened for BHSU in the top of the third when Hernandez singled with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Carli Maley singled to move Hernandez over and Caylee Mann batted her in with another single. A fielder's choice made it runners on the corners with two outs. Alyssa Wong was hit by a pitch to load the bases and back-to-back bases loaded walks by Lily Simmons and Reyes Mims made it 6-1 BHSU.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, Westmoreland led off with a double, she scored on a single by Kubitschek. Olivia Litzen hit a single to move her to second and a bunt single loaded the bases. After two soft fly outs and Paige Goodell entering, Cailynn Parsons singled to score two runs and make it 6-4.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Kubitschek walked with two outs and Litzen singled two move her to second. Kate Hella singled to score Kubitschek and make it 6-5.
  • Parsons hit a solo home run to tie the game at six in the bottom of the sixth with two outs. Stephens singled and Neill walked before Westmoreland hit a three-run home run to make it 9-6. Kubitschek singled and Litzen reached on a fielding error to put runners on first and second. With two outs, Kamdyn Hagerty hit a double to score another run and make it 10-6.
  • In the top of the seventh, BHSU's offense found a gear. Audrey Fouras singled and Gracie Oswald reached on a fielder's choice that had a throwing error that allowed Fouras to make it to second. Simmons doubled to score Fouras and make it 10-7. With two outs, Melendez singled to score two more runs and make it 10-9. Kaufman-Warner singled to put runners on first and second before a groundout ended the game with BHSU losing 10-9.

BHSU will play two more games to end the regular season and will need some help from New Mexico Highlands in order to make the RMAC Tournament.
