Yellow Jackets Drop RMAC Match to Mountaineers

SPEARFISH, S.D.- The Black Hills State Yellow Jackets were unable to go 2-0 in their opening RMAC homestand as they fell to the Western Colorado Mountaineers in three sets as WCU were able to silence what was a great A2 Arena crowd and get their first RMAC win since November 16, 2024. Carsyn Mettler had a great game for the Yellow Jackets with 14 kills and a .440 hitting percentage, but BHSU was not able to get past the great defense and offense of WCU.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Yellow Jackets started this game exactly how they wanted after their win last night. They took 13 of the first 16 points with Mettler having three kills and aces from Elena Atkinson and Emma Kruger early. However, after an unsuccessful challenge by WCU, the Mountaineers went on a 13-4 run to cut the lead to one at 17-16. After a BHSU scored four of the next six points, WCU went on a 5-2 run to take a 24-23 lead. BHSU tied it at 24 before the Mountaineers got a kill and an ace to win 26-24 in the first set.
  • BHSU won four of the first five points in the second set with three kills and a block. WCU answered with three straight points to tie at four. The Green and Gold took three of the next four to take a 7-5 lead, but WCU caught fire early as the Mountaineers went on a 20-8 run with Mettler getting three kills in a row being the only run BHSU had in the set as Western took the set 25-15.
  • The third set was all WCU as the Mountaineers started the set on a 17-6 run. The rest of the third set was pretty back-and-forth with Western having three service errors, but they were still able to take the set at 25-12 and winning the match 3-0.
