Durango, Colo. – The Black Hills State volleyball team lost two matches to Fort Lewis and Colorado Mesa over the weekend.
In the first match on Friday, the Yellow Jackets fell to the Fort Lewis Skyhawks in four games (18-25, 25-16, 13-25, 18-25). Amy O'Neill played well for the Jackets, recording 15 kills. Caitlin Templeton and Meghan Sipe added 13 and eight kills, respectively. Setter Darbi Yost recorded 20 assists during the match.
"We were flat to begin set one, but turned it around in set two," said head coach Sally Nichols. "We played crisp and kept our intensity throughout the set. We struggled in sets three and four passing the ball and couldn't get our timing on offense."
On Saturday, the Jackets faced a tough team in Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks defeated the Yellow Jackets in straight sets (19-25, 20-25, 19-25). O'Neill let the Jackets again with 10 kills and four block assists. Senior Kylee Lamb added two solo blocks and five block assists for the Jacket defense.
"We blocked really well on Saturday," said Nichols. "We fell short of victory but improved over our performance on Friday."
The Yellow Jackets next matches will take place in New Mexico, where they will face off against New Mexico Highlands and Western New Mexico on Oct. 12 and Oct. 13.
