Rapid City, S.D. – The Black Hills State University softball team returned to the softball diamond this afternoon for a non-conference double header against NAIA opponent Dakota Wesleyan. The Yellow Jackets won the first game 2-0 behind a solid pitching effort by senior Katie Wagner who gave up one hit and allowed no runs. In the Second game the Yellow Jackets fell to the Tigers 2-1.
In their first match-up of the day the Yellow Jackets saw a pitchers dual, with a scoreless game through five innings before the Yellow Jackets recorded two runs in the sixth inning. Wagner pitched a complete game for Black Hills State, she faced 28 batters, recording seven strike-outs and one hit, not allowing a single run.
Black Hills State was led offensively by sophomore Kelsie Chambers who recorded two hits on three at bats. Freshman Cassie Smith played designated player for the Yellow Jackets and recorded one run, and two hits on three at bats. Sophomore catcher Lenaya Vigil scored Black Hills State's second run of the game, she finished the contest with one run and one hit on three at bats.
The Yellow Jackets had a trio of pitchers in their second game of the day. Alex Huntington went 2.1 innings and gave up one run on five hits, Nikki Chacon saw 2.2 innings on the mound and gave up one run on three hits. Wagner closed the game for the Yellow Jackets with one hit after seeing eight batters.
Black Hills State was led offensively by sophomore Lenaya Vigil who finished the contest with one hit and one run one three at bats. Vigil scored Black Hills States lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo homerun.
The Yellow Jackets will return action Saturday as they travel to Mesa, Colo. to face off against RMAC opponent Colorado Mesa, game times are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. MT.
