SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University volleyball team made quick work of the Chadron State Eagles in a 3-0 victory Tuesday night in the Young Center.
The Yellow Jackets won the three sets 25-20, 25-19 and 25-20, winning their seventh match of the season, eclipsing last year's total in head coach Kristin Carmichael's first season at the helm of the Green and Gold. Black Hills State is now 7-13 overall and 5-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Chadron State falls to 3-16, 2-9.
The first set was played toe-to-toe over the first 14 points for each team until the Yellow Jackets stretched out a lead at 18-14. The Green and Gold utilized an attacking error from Chadron State then three-straight kills, one each from Shelby Mayer, Meghan Sipe and Sammi Ausborn. The 18th point came on a block from Brynn Eckhardt and Mayer.
The Eagles then fought back and knotted the score at 18-all until a kill from Danielle Torpey ended the brief CSC run. From there, the Yellow Jackets took charge en route to the 25-20 victory.
In the second set, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 9-3 lead that would only be challenged at scores of 14-13 and 16-15. However, the Green and Gold controlled the rest of the match en route to the 25-19 victory.
The Yellow Jackets again took control of the third set with an 18-10 lead, however the Eagles fought back with eight-straight points to tie the game. The Green and Gold then utilized a block from Mayer and Torpey to take a one-point lead. The Eagles quickly answered back with a kill from Lelalelei Nomura.
In an exciting point, Eckhardt set up Torpey for a kill and the 20-19 lead, a lead the Yellow Jackets would not relinquish heading into the 25-20 set and match victory.
Black Hills State returns to the Young Center on Saturday for a 5 p.m. match with Colorado Christian.
