LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Riding a three-match win streak, the Black Hills State University volleyball team was unable to stretch it to four matches in a 3-1 loss to Colorado Christian University Friday night in Lakewood, Colorado.
The Yellow Jackets were unable to find the magic that led them to a 3-0 sweep of CCU just last Saturday as the Cougars improve to 15-9 overall and 7-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets fall to 9-14, 7-7. Colorado Christian won the match 25-14, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-19.
After falling in set one, the Yellow Jackets looked as if their luck would be the same in set two, down 14-9. The Green and Gold began to turn the tide with a kill from Meghan Sipe, followed by an assisted block from Kenzie Kazmer and Shelby Mayer.
Black Hills State then pulled within two points on as Brynn Eckhardt found Kazmer for the kill.
The run was short lived for BHSU as Colorado Christian rebuilt its lead to 17-13. However, the Yellow Jackets methodically fought their way back and tied the score at 19-19 when Holly Hamlin and Danielle Torpey had an assisted block. The two squads then held ties as 20-20 and 22-22.
That's when the Yellow Jackets worked in for the sting as Hamlin had a service followed by a kill from Kazmer to push to set point. The Cougars answered back with a kill of their own to pull within one point at 24-23.
However, Kazmer took matters into her own hands and ended the set on a kill to take the set 25-23.
Black Hills State was unable to gain traction in the final two sets, falling in the match 3-1.
The Yellow Jackets return home for their final three home matches of the season, beginning with a Halloween affair against Metro State University of Denver at 7 p.m.
