SPEARFISH, S.D. – Behind 13 kills from Holly Hamlin and 12 from Danielle Torpey and 45 assists from Brynn Eckhardt, the Black Hills State University volleyball team defeated rival South Dakota Mines 3-1 Tuesday night in the Young Center.
The nonconference victory avenges an earlier loss to SD Mines while the Yellow Jackets improve to 10-16 on the season while the Hardrockers fall to 13-11.
The 25-19, 28-26, 20-25 and 25-21 four-set victory also sends seniors Holly Hamlin and Meghan Sipe out with a victory while playing on their home floor for the final time.
The Yellow Jackets took set one handily 25-19. After falling behind 3-1, the Green and Gold switched gears and opened a lead of 8-4 and eventually stretched it to 19-11.
Black Hills State used a five-point run to help boost the lead from 14-11 to 19-11. The Yellow Jackets then took the set behind a kill from Holly Hamlin and a service ace from Brynn Eckhardt.
In set two, BHSU played behind throughout the first half of the set before finally taking the lead at 17-16. The Yellow Jackets scored the next four points, three of them thanks to blocks from Holly Hamlin and Danielle Torpey, to take the 20-16 lead.
The Hardrockers fought back into the match and knotted the score at 23-23 making for an exciting finish. With the score tied at 26-all, Danielle Torpey put the Yellow Jackets at set point with a kill. The Green and Gold then won the set via an attacking error from Jena Kreuzer of SDMS&T.
After falling in a tightly contested third set, 25-20, the Yellow Jackets prevailed 25-21 in the fourth set to take the match.
With the scored knotted at 15-all, the Yellow Jackets went on a run to open a 19-15 lead behind a pair of blocks for Shelby Mayer, a block from Meghan Sipe and an attacking error for the Hardrockers. The Yellow Jackets continued to push ahead and eventually took the set, and match, on a kill from Holly Hamlin.
Black Hills State enters the final weekend of regular season play on Friday at Regis and finishing at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.
