VB: Yellow Jackets take down Aggies, fall to Wildcats in final day in Missouri

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Black Hills State University volleyball team split the second day of the Southern Invitational, falling to Wayne State (3-0), 3-0, before defeating Cameron (1-3), 3-1. The Yellow Jackets finish the opening weekend of the season with a 2-2 record.

WSC 3, BHSU 0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-17)

In the first set of the day, the Wildcats got out to a 4-1 lead, but four consecutive points by the Yellow Jackets gave them a 5-4 lead. However, Wayne State responded with an 8-1 run to take back the lead and the momentum, and WSC went out to win the first set, 25-16.

The Yellow Jackets got out in front early in the second set, initially leading 4-0, and eventually stretching out the score to 11-6 in favor of BHSU. However, the Wildcats outscored the Green and Gold 19-5 to close out the second set, 25-16, and take a 2-0 hold of the match.

The third set played out similarly to the first two, with the teams battling back-and-forth before Wayne State pulled ahead, ultimately winning the set, 25-17, to sweep the match, 3-0.

Madee Hoopman led the Yellow Jackets with eight kills in the match, while Laurel Lech tallied her second double-double of the season, recording 10 assists and 11 digs.

BHSU 3, CU 1 (17-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18)

The Aggies rattled off seven consecutive points early in the first set to take control, and went up, 1-0, in the match.

However, in the second match, the Yellow Jackets got back into things taking a lead at 6-5, and never looking back. A pair of kills by Peyton Bodemann put BHSU up 13-7, forcing Cameron into a quick timeout. But coming out of the break, the Green and Gold kept the pressure on, scoring three more points to lead 16-7 before the Aggies got a sideout. CU fought back to get within two at 24-22, but a kill by Kindra Cerrone wrapped up the set and tied the match at one set a piece.

The third set proved to be a back-and-forth affair, with neither team leading by more than two until a kill by Hailee Frey put the Yellow Jackets up, 16-13, and forced an Aggie timeout. The Green and Gold were able to keep CU at a distance for the remainder of the set, ultimately winning by four, 25-21.

In the fourth set, Cameron held an early 5-3 lead, however three kills by Madee Hoopman and a service ace by Tess Thomas helped BHSU storm back to take a lead that they would never relinquish. Hoopman finished with eight kills in the set as the Yellow Jackets earned the 2-1 match victory with a 25-18 set four win.

In the match, Hoopman hit .436 with 22 kills. Cerrone also had double-digit kills, tallying 14 while hitting .423. Laurel Lech recorded her third double-double in four games, putting up 21 assists, 15 digs, and also adding nine kills.
