Black Hills State softball, and Head Coach
Ashlyn Englehorn, have announced their 2023 signing class of 10 new Yellow Jackets.
"I think this class will play a vital role in helping our program reach its full potential," Englehorn said. "They will help us build onto a strong foundation and expectation we've been able to see with our current team. This class adds depth and competition in all positions to create an overall competitive and supportive culture within our program."
The class includes two pitchers, two catchers, four outfielders and two infielders. It also breaks down to include 10 incoming freshman from nine different states, with two from Nebraska, and then one each from South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Minnesota, Texas, Oklahoma, Montana and Oregon.
Carli Maley – 3B/C, Polson H.S., Polson, Mont.
Maley is a third baseman and catcher from Polson High School in Montana. In her high school career, she hit .455 with 96 total hits, 90 RBI and 14 home runs. Last year as a junior, she finished the season with a .479 average on 46 hits with 42 RBI and nine home runs to help her boast an .854 slugging percentage. In both her sophomore and junior years, she was named All-State and First Team All-Conference as her team took third in the state tournament in 2022 and made another tournament berth in 2023.
"Maley brings a blue-collar work ethic and great leadership which we are excited to add into our team," Englehorn added. "She has high expectations for herself on and off the field and we are excited to see how she competes for us for four years."
Caitlyn Hoff – P/UTL, West Central H.S., Hartford, S.D.
Hoff was a four-time State Champion at West Central High School in South Dakota in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. The right-handed pitcher and utility player was also a State Champion with her summer club team in 2023. In her freshman and junior years, she was named All-State First Team, and was a member of the National Honors Society for the 2023-24 year.
"Hoff brings a dominant presence in the circle and in the box," said Englehorn. "She brings great versatility to our pitching staff and power to our offense. We're excited she gets to stay close to home and play in front of her family."
Sierra Soto – C/UTL, Coweta H.S., Coweta, Okla.
Soto is a catcher and utility player from Coweta High School in Oklahoma. There, she was a four-year letter winner, and hit .335 as a senior. Last year she was named Class 5A-3 First Team All-District catcher, Class 5A-6A Large East First Team All-Region catcher, and Class 5A-6 Large East First Team All-State catcher. She earned Class 5A-3 Honorable Mention in 2021 and 2022. Soto helped her team to a State Championship in 202, and followed that up with back-to-back State Runner-Up runs in 2021 and 2022 before making it to the semifinals in 2023.
"Soto brings experience at a high level as she's competed with some of the best in high school and club ball," said Englehorn. "She will bring quiet leadership behind the plate and a big bat in the lineup."
Gracie Oswald – OF, Cheyenne East H.S., Cheyenne, Wyo.
Oswald is an outfielder from Cheyenne East High School in Wyoming where she will enter her senior year with a .538 batting average. She has accumulated 121 hits, including seven home runs, 20 doubles, 18 triples, 105 RBI, 109 runs scored and 35 steals. Last season as a junior, she was a team captain on the State Runner-Up team as she finished the year with a .444 average on 52 hits including 11 doubles and four home runs. She also drove in 29 runs and scored 46 times, while holding a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. In 2023, Oswald was named to the All-Cheyenne Team, as well as First Team All-State and All-Conference in 2023 and 2021.
"Oswald brings power and consistency to the class," Englehorn added. "She has had an outstanding offense presence in high school that should translate over to the college level."
Desi Hernandez – C, West Plains H.S., Amarillo, Texas
Hernandez is a catcher from West Plains High School in Texas, where she has been named Academic All-District each of the last three years. Last season she batted .500, winning Offensive Player of the Year in the conference, and being named First Team All-District. The year before, as a sophomore, she hit .450 while boasting a .997 fielding percentage, and was an All-District Honorable Mention. She also was a member of the Glory Adkins Gold 18U club team.
"Hernandez will bring a ton of energy to our team and to our offense - she swings big and is fun to watch," Englehorn said. "She has played high level club ball and is constantly working to develop in any and every way possible."
Skylar Bedlan – P, North Platte H.S., North Platte, Neb.
Bedlan is a pitcher from North Platte High School in Nebraska where her team finished as State Runner-Up in her freshman season. She is a three-time winner of the NPHS Athletic Award, a 2021 and 2022 Lincoln Journal Star Class A Honorable Mention and 2022 Omaha World Herald Class A Honorable Mention. During her time there, she has accumulated a .358 batting average with 79 RBI, including a .926 fielding percentage.
"Bedlan will join our pitching staff and will help add some variety into our depth there," said Englehorn. "She plays with confidence that will help her compete at a high level for us."
Andria Fitch – OF, Kasson Mantorville H.S., Kasson, Minn.
Fitch was a senior year team captain and lettered three times at Kasson Mantorville High School in Minnesota. The outfielder started 23 games as a junior, averaging .359 with a home run and 12 RBI to go along with seven steals and a .883 fielding percentage.
"Fitch will step up for us in the outfield and on offense with her speed and her mentality," added Englehorn. "She will go big and dare to fail to push her teammates to their greatest potential on and off the field."
Tessa Twedt – 1B/UTL, Brookings, H.S., Brookings, S.D.
Twedt is a three-year letter winning first baseman and utility player from Brookings High School in Brookings, South Dakota. Her team last year finished runner up in Class AA in its first year of being an official sport. Prior to that, she was a member of the SD Renegades club team where she hit.400 as a junior and recorded a .345 on-base percentage as a senior to go along with a .980 fielding percentage.
"Twedt will cross the state and get to play close to home," said Englehorn. "She will push us to be better on and off the field with her work ethic in the classroom, community, and on the field. She plays within a great club organization that sends out great players and we are excited that she chose BH."
Katelyn Jarzobski – UTL, Millard North H.S., Omaha, Neb.
Jarzobski is a utility player from Omaha, Nebraska who will be graduating from Millard North High School. During her time there she's hit .394 with 30 RBI, 27 runs scored and four stolen bases. She has accumulated 39 hits, including three home runs, 10 doubles and a triple, while also maintaining a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. Jarzobski was named Metro All-Academic in 2022 and 2023, while also earning the Rick Gilbride Sportsmanship Award and Metro Conference First Team in 2023. Along with her high school team, she has also been a member of the Nebraska Gold, Fury Gold, Fury, and Sizzle club teams.
"Jarzobski adds high softball IQ and versatility to the program," Englehorn said. "She will be able to step up in multiple roles for us. She ended her high school career with high honors that she will be able to bring to our team."
Calli Weaving – OF, Wilsonville H.S., Wilsonville, Ore.
Weaving is an outfielder from Wilsonville High School in Oregon who helped the team finish as State Runner-Up in 2022. She was also All-Conference Second Team in 2023 and All-Conference Honorable Mention in 2022. In 13 games last season, she slashed .486/.538/1.281 with seven extra-base hits, nine RBI, 10 runs scored and seven stolen bases. Weaving is also a member of the National Honors Society.
"Weaving gives us power from the left side and speed in the outfield," said Englehorn. "She's played with and against the top talent in Oregon and we are excited to see how that translates into what she will offer BH Softball."
