Yellow Jackets Set for East River Competition at the Jackrabbit Stampede

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Gearing up for their second rodeo of the spring, the Black Hills State University men's and women's rodeo teams will compete in The Mount Rushmore State for the first time in the 2024-25 season as they travel to the Jackrabbit Stampede in Brookings. With four student-athletes currently within the top-3 of their respective events in the Great Plains Region, they look to secure their spot to the CNFR while others on the way up the standings look to make a late push with three rodeos remaining in the regular season.

BLACK HILLS STATE MEN'S RODEO STORYLINES
  • The Black Hills State men's rodeo team enters the second competition of the spring as the No. 6 team in the NIRA Great Plains Region standings with 756 points in the fall. They are coming off a spring opening ninth place finish at the Cyclone Stampede two weeks ago as they tallied 80 points. The highest team finish of the year thus far has been a fourth place team finish with 226 points at the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #1 in September.
  • Luke Mavity enters this weekend ranked No. 7 in the region in tie down roping with 235 points. So far this year he has posted a second place finish in the event at the Falcon Frontier Days Rodeo, a fifth place finish at the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #2, and a sixth place finish at the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #1.
  • After another solid finish this past weekend in Ames, Jess Harper moved up a spot and now ranks No. 3 in the Great Plains Region as a team roping heeler, tallying 214 points this year. He's been a part of one team roping victory as he paired up with Colton Zubach of Dickinson State University at the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #2. Additionally, he paired up with Zubach for a fourth place finish at the Cyclone Stampede, a fifth place finish at the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #1 and for a tenth place finish at the Mystics Stampede Rodeo.
  • Glen Lammers is in his 17th season as the head coach of the Yellow Jacket men's and women's rodeo program.
#11 BLACK HILLS STATE WOMEN'S RODEO STORYLINES
  • The Black Hills State women's rodeo team enters their second rodeo of the spring as the No. 1 team in the Great Plains Region and No. 11 nationally in the most recent NIRA standings with 2,169.83 points. BHSU currently sits 844.83 points ahead of Dickinson State, who is second in the regional standings.
  • The Yellow Jackets finished fifth at the Cyclone Stampede two weeks ago, tallying 175 points in the spring opener. In six fall rodeos, BHSU claimed team titles at the Falcon Frontier Days Rodeo, Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #1, Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #2, and the Triton Stampede. They also finished second at the Blue Hawk Stampede and the Mystics Stampede Rodeo in the first half of the season.
  • Cashae McGee ranks No. 1 in the Great Plains Region and is No. 12 nationally in the Women's All-Around standings with 830 points. She's earned a pair of all-around titles thus far in the season, occurring at the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #2 and the Mystics Stampede Rodeo. Additionally, Emma Ohm has earned one all-around title, which happened at the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #1.
  • The Yellow Jackets have dominated the barrel racing scene in the Great Plains Region in 2024-25, with four student-athletes ranking within the top-15 of the region. Sierra Steele leads the quartet after jumping four spots this past week with a second place finish at the Cyclone Stampede and bringing her point total to 360 on the year. She has also recorded finishes of second place at the Falcon Frontier Days Rodeo and third at the Triton Stampede this season.
  • McGee currently ranks No. 3 in the region in barrel racing, totaling 342 points so far this season. She's placed top-5 at five different rodeos this year by finishing third at the Falcon Frontier Days Rodeo and the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #1, fourth at the Triton Stampede and the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #2, and fifth at the Mystics Stampede Rodeo.
  • Making a jump two spots to a tie for the No. 11 ranking in the barrel racing regional standings is Raylee Fagerhaug after she notched her second consecutive third place finish with a time of 28.58 seconds on two go arounds at the Cyclone Stampede last week to bring her season total to 125 points. She also rounded out the fall season with a third place finish at the Mystics Stampede Rodeo.
  • Also sitting just outside of the top-10 in the regional barrel racing standings is Jayda Reinert who is currently tied for the No. 11 ranking with 125 points. This year she has notched a fourth place finish at the Falcon Frontier Days Rodeo, a sixth place finish at the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #2, and a ninth place finish at the Mystics Stampede Rodeo.
  • Ohm currently ranks No. 2 in the region in breakaway roping and is No. 5 nationally, totaling 475 points through seven rodeos so far this season. She has recorded a pair of titles in the event with wins at the Falcon Frontier Days Rodeo and the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #1, while also adding a fifth place finish at the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #2, a seventh place finish at the Triton Stampede, and a ninth place finish at the Mystics Stampede Rodeo.
  • Briley Anderson sits outside of the region's top-10 in breakaway roping, ranking No. 14 with 111.5 points with a third place finish at the Falcon Frontier Days Rodeo, a ninth place finish at the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #1, a tenth place finish at the Mystics Stampede Rodeo, and an 11th place finish at the Triton Stampede.
  • The BHSU cowgirls have also been dominant in goat tying during the 2024-25 season in the Great Plains Region, with seven student-athletes ranked within the top-15. Highlighting the Yellow Jackets in the event is McGee who not only ranks No. 2 in the region but is also No. 23 nationally as she has totaled 488 points. She has earned her points with a win at the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #2, a second place finish at the Blue Hawk Stampede, a third place finish at the Mystics Stampede Rodeo, a fourth place finish at the Triton Stampede, and an eighth place finish at the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #1.
  • The No. 4 cowgirl in goat tying in the Great Plains Region is Fagerhaug who has tallied 403.3 points with a first place tie at the Triton Stampede, a second place finish at the Falcon Frontier Days Rodeo, tied for second the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #2, a third place finish at the Blue Hawk Stampede, and a ninth place finish at the Mystics Stampede Rodeo.
  • With a second place finish at the Cyclone Stampede two weeks ago, Haley Husted has jumped three spots and into the top-5 of the regional standings in goat tying, ranking No. 5 with 370 points on the year. This season she won the event at the Mystics Stampede Rodeo, finished fourth at the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #2, sixth at the Falcon Frontier Days Rodeo, and tenth at the Blue Hawk Stampede.
  • After a third place finish in her last outing at the Cyclone Stampede, Capri Cammack jumped three spots and into the top-10 as she enters the weekend ranking No. 10 in the region in goat tying as she has tallied 175 points. This year she has also added a tie for second place at the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #2.
  • Sitting just outside of the top-10 in the regional standings and ranking No. 11 in goat tying is Ohm, who has tallied 141.5 points with a tie for second place at the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #1, an eighth place finish at the Falcon Frontier Days Rodeo, and a ninth place finish at the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #2.
  • Finishing tenth at the Cyclone Stampede two weeks ago, Linley Schmitz moved up a pair of spots to a No. 15 ranking in the regional standings as she has accumulated 115 points in goat tying. She has also added a fifth place finish in the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #2 this past fall.
  • Rounding out the seven Yellow Jackets that make up nearly half of the Great Plains regional rankings is Kenzie Homelvig who is No. 14 with 106 points. This year she has notched a fifth place finish at the Mystics Stampede Rodeo, a sixth place finish at the Mid-Plains College Stampede Rodeo #1, and a ninth place finish at the Triton Stampede.
