Yellow Jacket Cowgirls Remain in CNFR Short Go Contention on Tuesday

CASPER, Wyo. - The Black Hills State University women's rodeo team continued strong performances in the Tuesday slack, keeping all four cowgirls in the hunt for a spot in Saturday's short go. Both Haley Husted and Emma Ohm finished the second go within the top-12, holding down ties for 11th and 12th place respectively in the goat tying and breakaway roping. The first performance on Tuesday night featured just one Yellow Jacket, Sierra Steele, who looked to have her third consecutive clean run in sight before an unfortunate tip of the third and final barrel.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Jayda Reinert began the Tuesday morning slack by besting her first go time by 0.09 seconds, clocking a time of 14.15 seconds for a 25th place finish in the second go. She brought her total time for the week to 28.39 seconds for 16th place following two go arounds.
  • The second barrel racer of the day for the Yellow Jackets, the 4-time qualifier of Sierra Steele came within 0.02 seconds of her career-best CNFR time set in the 2024 short go and moved seven spots up the leaderboard with a second go time of 14.12 seconds for a tie for 20th place in the round. Overall following the second go, she moved into 21st place overall with a two go time of 28.57 seconds.
  • Emma Ohm remained within the top-12 of the breakaway roping competion on Tuesday morning, recording a second go time of 3.5 seconds for a tie for 23rd place in the round. Overall following the second go, she sits in a tie for 12th place with a time of 5.6 seconds on two go arounds.
  • Rounding out the slack in the morning was Haley Husted, who also stayed within the top-12 in the goat tying competition with a time of 6.6 seconds for a tie for 16th place in the round. In two go arounds, at the end of the second go she was tied for 11th place with a time of 13.1 seconds as she moved six spots up the standings.
  • Steele ran her third go of the week in the first performance on Tuesday night, however, her streak of clean runs came to an end as the third and final barrel fell, bringing what would have been a 13.91 second run that would have put her among the leaders to 18.91 seconds with a five second penalty. Her total time on three go arounds went to 47.48 seconds with three performances remaining in the week before the short go in barrel racing.

NOTES

  • Reinert saw a 0.09 second improvement from her first go time of 14.24 seconds in barrel racing, giving the sophomore a pair of sub-14.25 second runs in her CNFR debut.
  • Steele's 14.12 second run in the second go of barrel racing bested her fastest time as a Yellow Jacket at the CNFR for the second day in a row, improving by 0.33 seconds from yesterday for her sixth time of 14.50 seconds or better in the event in her collegiate career at nationals.
  • Both BHSU barrel racers improved their time from round one to round two and clocked the fastest times in program history at the CNFR since Kristi Steffes' 13.85 second national championship round in 2016.
  • In her second appearance at the CNFR, Husted became the first Yellow Jacket to record back-to-back times of 6.6 seconds or better in the goat tying since Emilee Pauley went 6.4 and 6.4 in the second and third go arounds of the 2019 CNFR.
  • Ohm is taking advantage of her third appearance at the CNFR, becoming the first Yellow Jacket to notch back-to-back rounds of 3.5 seconds or better in the breakaway roping since Riley Donnelly went 3.0 and 3.0 in the second and third go arounds at the 2024 CNFR.
  • With the third go in progress, 12 barrel racers have completed three rounds, setting the time to catch for 12th place at 62.32 seconds, but only the top-5 have been clean runs with no barrels tipped and setting that time to catch at 44.55 seconds.
  • With the third go in progress, only three breakaway ropers have completed three rounds, setting the time to catch at 19.9 seconds. Only two of the three cowgirls have posted clean rounds with the time to catch there at 8.6 seconds.
  • With the third go in progress, 11 goat tiers have competed three clean rounds, setting the time to catch as 23.5 seconds.
