MANDAN, N.D. - The Black Hills State University men's and women's rodeo team traveled north to the Mystics Stampede this past weekend, where three individual titles from Bailey Verhulst (goat tying), Jayda Reinert (barrel racing), and Kiera Mavity (women's all-around), paved the way to the fourth consecutive team title for the Yellow Jacket cowgirls to begin the 2026-27 season. The Green & Gold tallied 480 points during the weekend on the women's side at Dale Pahlke Arena, which saw dominant performances in goat tying where they secured six of the top-10 placings and in barrel racing where they captured seven of the top-10 placings. On the men's side the team placed sixth with 125 points, which was highlighted by yet another top-5 team roping finish by the Erickson brothers.
HOW IT HAPPENED – MEN'S RODEO
- Hadly Erickson made the return to his former home rodeo and came away with a top-10 finish in steer wrestling, the posting a ninth place finish. He tied for sixth in the long go with a time of 5.1 seconds; however, he was unable to record a time in the short go.
- Hadly Erickson again teamed up with his brother, Burel Erickson, to post a fourth place finish in the team roping as they clocked an overall time of 22.6 seconds. In the long go they recorded a time of 9.8 seconds and then in the short go notched the fourth-fastest time of the round with a time of 12.8 seconds.
HOW IT HAPPENED – WOMEN'S RODEO
- The Black Hills State goat tiers again dominated the competition as they have all fall, taking three of the top-4 placings and six of the top-10. Tying for the victory in the event were Bailey Verhulst and Raylee Fagerhaug, as they both posted overall times of 14.6 seconds on two go arounds. Verhulst tied for the fifth-fastest time of the long go at 7.6 seconds and won the short go with a time of 7.0 seconds. Fagerhaug was second in both the long go and short go with times of 7.4 and 7.2 respectively. Kenzie Homelvig added a top-4 finish, finishing fourth with an overall time of 15.0 seconds as she ran a time of 7.7 seconds in the long go and the third-fastest short go with a time of 7.3 seconds.
- Also securing top-10 places for the Yellow Jackets in goat tying were Kaydence Feia who finished in seventh place, Kiera Mavity who finished in ninth place, and Lainey Crago who finished in tenth place. Feia posted an overall time of 16.3 seconds on two go arounds as she clocked a time of 8.4 seconds in the long go and 7.9 seconds in the short go. Mavity and Crago only notched times in the long go as they recorded times of 7.1 and 7.9 seconds respectively in the round.
- The trio of Paige Delaney, Kenzie Homelvig, and Kamry Davis recorded top-10 finishes in the breakaway roping, with Delaney leading the way with a tie for third place with an overall time of 6.5 seconds. She won the long go with a time of 2.5 seconds and was fourth in the short go with a time of 4.0 seconds. Homelvig posted a sixth place finish with an overall time of 16.0 seconds, first with the third-fastest time of 2.7 seconds and then a time of 13.3 seconds in the short go. Davis was only able to post a time of 2.9 seconds in the long go as she tied for tenth place.
- The Yellow Jackets again also dominated in the barrel racing, sweeping the top-3 places and securing seven of the top-10 place finishers. Jayda Reinert once again took the wins in both the long go (17.41 seconds) and short go (17.54 seconds) to win the overall title with a time of 34.95 seconds. Sierra Steele came away with a second place finish overall, clocking a time of 35.22 seconds, as she was second in both the long go (17.61 seconds) and short go (17.61 seconds). Mavity rounded out the top-3 with an overall time of 35.31 seconds, as she was third in the long go with a time of 17.65 seconds and was fourth in the short go with a time of 17.66 seconds.
- Also in the top-10 of the barrel racing competition for the Yellow Jackets were Fagerhaug, Homelvig, Verhulst, and Cale Redlin. Fagerhaug tallied a seventh place finish overall with a time of 36.01 seconds, recording times of 18.15 seconds on the long go and 17.86 seconds on the short go. Homelvig was eighth place overall with a time of 36.06 seconds, clocking marks of 18.07 seconds on the long go and 17.99 seconds on the short go. Verhulst was ninth place overall with a time of 36.16 seconds, notching times of 18.09 seconds on the long go and 18.07 seconds on the short go. Rounding out the BH athletes was Redlin in tenth place overall with a time of 36.22 seconds, posting times of 18.08 seconds on the long go and 18.14 seconds on the short go.
