BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Black Hills State University men's and women's rodeo teams were back in action for the second time this spring as they competed at the Jackrabbit Stampede last Friday and Saturday. The men's squad led by
Luke Mavity and
Mickey Strawn in tie down roping, finished eighth overall with 110 points as the duo notched top-10 finishes in the event. On the women's side,
Haley Husted won the goat tying event while
Capri Cammack finished second in barrel racing, leading the way to a tie for fifth place as a team with 150 team points.

HOW IT HAPPENED - MEN'S RODEO
- Luke Mavity secured his second consecutive top-5 finish in tie down roping to begin the spring, collecting 90 points towards his season total as he tallied a time of 26.4 seconds for fourth place. He was sixth place in the long go with a time of 14.9 seconds and then was second place in the short go with a time of 11.5 seconds. Also notching an eighth place finish in the event was Mickey Strawn who recorded the fifth-fastest time in the long go for 20 points with a 14.8 second run, however, he was unable to record a time in the short go.

HOW IT HAPPENED – WOMEN'S RODEO
- With four Yellow Jackets qualifying for the short go in goat tying, it was the 1-2 finish by Haley Husted and Kenzie Homelvig that highlighted the event. Husted won the event and collected 150 total points with an overall time of 13.2 seconds, after finishing third in the long go with a time of 6.5 seconds, and a second place short go time of 6.7 seconds. Homelvig was just two tenths of a second behind in second place as she tallied 120 points and an overall time of 13.4 seconds following a sixth place finish in the long go with a run of 6.8 seconds, and a win in the short go with a time of 6.6 seconds. Raylee Fagerhaug tied for a sixth place finish with an overall time of 14.9 seconds while collecting 30 points, as she tied for fourth in the long go with a run of 6.6 seconds, and was ninth in the short go with a time of 8.3 seconds. Rounding out the group was Lainey Crago who posted a time of 7.5 seconds for a tie for tenth place in the long go, while she was unable to record a time in the short go.
- The team roping pair of Paige Delaney and Jori Horsburgh finished tenth overall in the event, recording the tenth-fastest time of the long go at 19.2 seconds before being unable to post a time in the short go.
- Capri Cammack secured 150 points towards her season total as she led the Yellow Jackets in barrel racing, posting an overall time of 26.75 seconds for second place. She was second place in both the long go (13.45 seconds) and short go (13.30 seconds) rounds. Rounding out a trio of Yellow Jackets who qualified for the short go were Kiera Mavity and Kamry Davis, who were ninth and tenth overall in the event with times of 27.62 seconds and 27.67 seconds respectively. Mavity finished seventh in the long go with a time of 13.76 seconds and was ninth in the short go with a time of 13.86 seconds. Davis finished tied for ninth in the long go with a time 13.79 seconds and was tenth with a time of 13.88 seconds in the short go.

UP NEXT
Black Hills State University men's and women's rodeo will be back in action at the Will Lantis Yellow Jacket Stampede, which will be held at Seven Down Arenas outside of Spearfish on Friday, April 24, and Saturday, April 25. On Friday the slack begins at 12 p.m. with the performance to follow at 7 p.m., while on Saturday the slack will start at 10 a.m. with the short go finals to start at 7 p.m. once again. All the action will also be streamed live on KDSJ TV.
