Yellow Jackets Record a Dozen Event Titles in Bauer Open

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Black Hills State University men's and women's track & field teams returned to the Black Hills of South Dakota on Wednesday, competing at the annual Bauer Open at South Dakota Mines' O'Harra Stadium. The Yellow Jackets' strong performances resulted in 12 event titles, 46 top-5 finishes, 62 top-10 finishes, and 16 career-bests between the men's and women's squads. Leading the way for the Green & Gold on the women's side was Avery Marler, who recorded a pair of top-10 times in school history in the 100m and 200m dash for a pair of event victories. On the men's side, Flynn Johnston (400m run), Caden Strasser (800m run), and Sean Shipp (3,000m steeplechase) each captured event titles.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – MEN'S TRACK & FIELD
  • Isaac Job was the lone Yellow Jacket competing in the 100m dash, clocking a time of 11.85 for 18th place.
  • Recording a winning and career-best time of 49.37 in the 400m dash was Flynn Johnston.
  • Earning a victory in the 800m run was Caden Stasser, who recorded a career-best time of 1:55.07. Adding a third place finish with a career-best time of 1:57.58 was Anthony Ackerman, while Conor Phipps notched a career-best time of 2:05.38 for ninth place.
  • Phipps notched a top-5 finish in the 1,500m run, narrowly missing a career-best time by less than half a second as he crossed the finish line fourth in a time of 4:13.67.
  • Emmett Swartzentruber recorded a top-10 finish with a time of 16:23.26 for ninth place in the 5,000m run.
  • In the 110m hurdles, Jayden Curtis posted a season-best time of 15.71 for second place.
  • Securing the title in the 3,000m steeplechase, Sean Shipp ran to a winning time of 9:55.47.
  • The 4x100 relay team of Ashley Williams, Bridger Anderson, Jude Guevara, and Dawson Lindeen, ran to the fastest time this season in the event with a third place time of 43.65.
  • Earning a pair of top-5 finishes in the high jump were Adam Stimes and Trennan Pearson who cleared 1.95m (6' 4.75") for second place and 1.90m (6' 2.75") for fourth place respectively.
  • McKalester Johns led the way in the pole vault with a third place finish as he cleared 4.27m (14' 0"), while Jeremy Harms added a sixth place finish by clearing 3.97m (13' 0.25").
  • The trio of Javin Walker, Seth Wilson, and Trennan Pearson, recorded top-5 finishes in the long jump. Walker finished third with a mark of 6.42m (21' 0.75"), Wilson finished fourth with a mark of 6.27m (20' 7"), and Pearson finished fifth with a mark of 6.19m (20' 3.75"). Adding a top-10 finish in the event with a career-best jump of 6.17m (20' 3") was Casen Willson. Rounding out the Yellow Jackets in the event was Curtis who recorded a mark of 5.44m (17' 10.25").
  • In the triple jump, Casen Wilson posted a career-best mark of 13.13m (43' 1") for second place. Adding a top-5 finish was Walker who notched another third place finish with a jump of 12.96m (42' 6.25"). Guevara rounded out the trio with a seventh place finish and jump of 11.74m (38' 6.25").
  • The lone Yellow Jacket in the shot put, Matthew LoFaso, recorded a throw of 12.84m (42' 1.5") for fifth place.
  • Ryan Baker posted a second place finish in the discus, throwing for a mark of 43.00m (141' 1"). LoFaso added a top-10 finish with a career-best mark of 36.59m (120' 0") for seventh place. Rounding out the trio was Barren Yellow Bird who was 12th with a career-best throw of 31.45m (103' 2").
  • The pair of Baker and Yellow Bird posted top-5 finishes in the hammer throw as Baker finished third with a mark of 47.39m (155' 6") and Yellow Bird finished fourth with a career-best mark of 46.17m (151' 6"). Rounding out the trio, LoFaso finished 11th with a mark of 38.12m (125' 1").
  • In the javelin, Torin Knight secured a top-5 finish with a career-best throw of 47.01m (154' 3"). Casen Willson and Yellow Bird added top-10 finishes with throws of 45.03m (147' 9") for seventh place and 37.33m (122' 6") for eighth place respectively. Rounding out the group was Seth Wilson who posted a 12th place finish with a mark of 26.92m (88' 4").
HOW IT HAPPENED – WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
  • Avery Marler ran a career-best and winning time of 12.35 in the 100m dash. Her time also ranks eighth in school history. Adding a fifth place finish was Alexa Colman who clocked a time of 13.46, while Sophia Kennedy was sixth place with a time of 13.49.
  • Marler clocked her second event win, career-best time, and top-10 time in program history as she ran a time of 25.42 in the 200m dash. Her time is tied for seventh all-time in school history. Clocking a second place time of 26.13 was Saraya Afrank, and fifth place with a career-best time of 27.07 was Jillian Brennan. Adding three more top-10 times were Madison Zander who was sixth with a time of 27.12 in her first collegiate race in the event, Colman who was eighth with a career-best time of 27.83, and Kennedy who was tenth with a time of 29.04.
  • In the 400m dash, Gracie Wilts ran a career-best time of 1:00.71 for second place.
  • Brennan ran to a winning time of 2:21.65 in the 800m run, while Zander added a third place finish with a career-best time of 2:24.39 for third place.
  • The pair of Nicole Clark and Morgan Sumption notched top-5 finishes in the 1,500m run, posting times of 5:10.24 for third place and 5:19.67 for fourth place respectively. Adding a top-10 finish with a time of 5:31.04 was Payton Sheehan who was sixth place.
  • Running to a tenth place finish in the 5,000m run with a time of 19:55.16 was Alyssa Brandt.
  • Recording a 1-2 finish in the 100m hurdles was Madyson Wolfe and Alivia Weathers, clocking times of 15.66 and 15.81 respectively.
  • In her first time competing in the 400m hurdles, Weathers ran to a third place finish and time of 1:08.81.
  • Jacey Wipf ran to a career-best time of 13:07.02 for a third place finish in the 3,000m steeplechase.
  • The Yellow Jackets went 1-2 in the 4x100 relay, with the winning team of Afrank, Marler, Wilts, and Wolfe recording a time of 48.90, and the second place team of Kennedy, Erin Weibel, Colman, and Weathers clocking a time of 51.79.
  • Gretchen Adamski secured her third consecutive pole vault title with a mark of 3.66m (12' 0") to lead a sweep of the top-6 placings. Finishing second and recording the tenth-best mark in school history was Brekkan Lockhart, clearing 3.51m (11' 6.25"). Lauryn Bennett was third place with a mark of 3.36m (11' 0.25"), Weibel was fourth place with a mark of 3.36m (11' 0.25"), Hope Bryant was fifth place with a mark of 3.06m (10' 0.5"), and Colman was sixth place with a mark of 2.91m (9' 6.5").
  • In the long jump, Afrank recorded a third place finish with a jump of 5.20m (17' 0.75").
  • The lone Yellow Jacket in the triple jump, Adlyn Eng recorded a mark of 10.29m (33' 9.25") to earn the event title.
  • Hanah Sullivan earned a third place finish in the shot put, notching a throw of 13.01m (42' 8.25").
  • Winning the discus was Cassidy Goddard, recording a mark of 40.54m (133' 0") for the event title, while Sullivan finished third place with a mark of 37.20m (122' 0").
  • With a career-best mark and the tenth-best mark in school history, Sullivan recorded the event title in the hammer throw with a mark of 48.55m (159' 3").
  • The lone Yellow Jacket in the javelin, Weibel tossed a career-best mark of 28.05m (92' 0") for ninth place.
