Reinert, Steele Lock Up 1-2 Regional Finish in Barrel Racing as Yellow Jacket Cowgirls Punch Ticket to CNFR

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University men's and women's rodeo teams concluded the 2025-26 regular season at the Cornhusker College Rodeo this past Friday and Saturday, recording team finishes of sixth place with 100 points on the men's side and third place with 330 points on the women's side. The Yellow Jacket cowboys recorded a pair of top-10 finishes, including the fourth straight top-4 finish by tie down roper Luke Mavity to end the year. The Yellow Jacket cowgirls secured a second place finish in the Great Plains Region, qualifying themselves for the 2026 College National Finals Rodeo next month in Casper, Wyoming. In the Sandhills Global Event Center on Saturday, BHSU locked up a 1-2 finish in the regular season barrel racing standings as Jayda Reinert capped off one of the top seasons in recent history in the event, capturing her seventh title in ten tries this year to run away with a regional title while Sierra Steele earned her second straight top-5 finish to enter the CNFR as No. 2 in the region.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED - MEN'S RODEO
  • Terran Talsma posted his second consecutive seventh place finish in steer wrestling to close out the year, notching an overall time of 30.2 seconds. He recorded a time of 8.3 seconds in the long go and a 21.9 second run in the short go.
  • Battling for a CNFR spot in tie down roping, Luke Mavity concluded his collegiate rodeo career with his fourth straight top-4 finish of the spring. He tallied 100 points on the weekend with an overall time of 28.8 seconds for fourth place. He notched the third-fastest time of the long go with a time of 9.8 seconds, and despite a broken barrier penalty that brought his short go time to 19.0 seconds, he finished with the fourth-fastest time of the final round.

HOW IT HAPPENED – WOMEN'S RODEO
  • Leading the way for four in the top-10 of the goat tying competition was Raylee Fagerhaug, who posted her second top-6 finish of the spring. She recorded a total time of 14.8 seconds and collected 35 points on the weekend, finishing in a tie for fourth in the long go with a time of 6.8 seconds and was sixth in the short go with a time of 8.0 seconds. Finishing in seventh place with an overall time of 15.1 seconds and earning 15 points on the weekend was Capri Cammack. For Cammack it was her second consecutive top-10 finish as she tied for fourth in the long go with a time of 6.8 seconds and notched a time of 8.3 seconds in the short go. In a tie for eighth place, Kiera Mavity recorded her second top-10 of the spring with a total time of 15.4 seconds. She qualified for the short go with a time of 7.3 seconds and followed it with a time of 8.1 seconds in the final round. Haley Husted closed out the regular season with her third straight top-10 finish, collecting 40 points on the weekend with a total time of 17.0 seconds. She finished third in the long go with 6.7 seconds and followed it with a 10.3 second run in the short go.
  • Hattie Kauffman closed out her collegiate rodeo career with a tenth place finish in breakaway roping, qualifying for the short go with a time of 2.9 seconds in the long go before being unable to record a time in the final round.
  • Jayda Reinert left no doubt of who the top barrel racer in the region was in the final rodeo of the regular season, securing her seventh title of the season in the event with a total time of 29.69 seconds and 170 total points. She finished the weekend with a 0.48 second lead on second place after the two rounds as she clocked the second-fastest time of the long go at 14.87 seconds and the fastest time of the short go at 14.82 seconds. Joining her in the top-4 of the event was Mavity who was third with an overall time of 30.18 seconds for 90 points, and Sierra Steele, who was fourth with a total time of 30.23 seconds for 120 points.  In the long go Mavity recorded a time of 15.33 seconds to reach the short go and then proceeded to post the second-fastest time of the final round with a time of 14.85 seconds. Steele won the long go with a time of 14.84 seconds and would finish with the fourth-fastest time of the short go at 15.39 seconds.

The Black Hills State University women's rodeo team and members Jayda Reinert (barrel racing), Sierra Steele (barrel racing), Haley Husted (goat tying), and Emma Ohm (breakaway roping) will advance to represent the Great Plains Region in the 2026 College National Finals Rodeo to be held in the Ford Wyoming Center in Caper, Wyoming, from June 14-20.
