Yellow Jackets Fall to #6 Washburn on Day One of Sioux Falls Volleyball Classic

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.- Black Hills State was unable to overcome #6 Washburn as the Ichabods proved why they were a top-ten team and took BHSU down in three sets. The Yellow Jackets were able to put together a major challenge to Washburn in the second set, where BHSU was tied with the opposition late, but the Ichabods were able to pull out the second set and then the third set as well as BHSU looks for their fourth win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The #6 team in the country took three of the first four points from BHSU to start the first set and then won five of the next eight to take an 8-4 lead. With BHSU down four, Izzy Saiki and Carsyn Mettler each had a kill and then Zoie Husman and Peyton McLeod got a block to bring it within one at 10-9. The Ichabods showed why they are a top team after that run as they turned it into a 15-5 run to win the set 25-14 and go up 1-0 in the match.
  • The Yellow Jackets started the second set with a kill from Izabel Abril and then the Yellow Jackets started the set with a 7-4 lead as Carsyn Mettler had two kills and a block to help BHSU take the early advantage. Three kills and a block in a 5-1 run gives Washburn the lead again at 9-8. BHSU went on a 6-3 run with six kills including two from Saiki, two from Husman, and one each from Mianna Cardenas and McLeod to go up 14-12. Four straight points by the Ichabods gave the #6 team the lead at 16-14 and then BHSU took four out of six with two kills from Mettler to tie it up at 18. Washburn finally broke it open winning seven of the last ten to take the second set 25-21.
  • After Washburn started the first set with an Emma Siron kill, BHSU scored three straight points to take a 3-1 lead with a kill and an ace by Husman. Washburn immediately went on a big run winning 13 of the next 17 to take a 14-7 lead. The Green and Gold would win four of the next six to cut the lead to five at 16-11 before Washburn ended on a 9-2 run to take a 25-13 set win and sweep the match.
