Soccer Heading to No. 17 Colorado Mines, Regis

Black Hills State women's soccer is heading south this weekend as the team will take on No. 17 Colorado Mines and Regis.

BHSU will play at CSM on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m., and then Regis on Sunday, Sept.  at 11 a.m.

The Yellow Jackets are 1-3-2 on the season, coming off a weekend in which they went 1-1 to open RMAC play. They defeated Colorado Christian, 1-0 on an early goal from Darby Whiteley, and then fell to Colorado Mesa 6-0 on Sunday.

"We have two tough RMAC matchups in the Denver area this weekend," said Head Coach Andrew Conniff. Our RMAC opening weekend served as a marker that we need to raise our training levels and start playing at a higher pace. We are confident in our ability to create chances and dictate the pace of games. We have some very talented players that haven't quite hit their stride yet. Hopefully we bring our best this weekend and come home with a result."

Black Hills State (1-3-2) at No. 17 Colorado Mines (5-1-1)
Colorado Mines came in ranked at 17 in the DII NCAA National Poll this week, currently sitting 5-1-1. The Orediggers have won both RMAC contests they've played this season, and defeated then No. 17 Seattle Pacific, 2-0 in non-conference play.

"Colorado Mines is incredibly physical and organized" said Conniff. "They have a couple really talented attacking players that provide a constant threat."

All-time, Yellow Jacket soccer is 0-6 against CSM, having last played on Oct. 1, 2021 in which BHSU fell 4-0.

"We will need to be at our best defending free kicks and corners, as these are situations Mines often turn into goals," Conniff added. "Our center midfielders will be key in this performance. We will need them to protect our back line while defending, and to provide quality service to our attacking players."

Black Hills State (1-3-2) at Regis (3-4-1)
So far this season, Regis is 3-4-1 with victories over Midwestern State, and RMAC opponents New Mexico Highlands and Adams State. RU has also played well against some tough opponents, including a close 1-0 loss to then No. 25 Angelo State on Sept. 4.

"Regis opened their season with some really challenging non-conference matchups, which looks to have prepared them well for the RMAC," Conniff said. "They opened last weekend with two wins and scored six goals in those games. Their forward, Kelby Kuo, had 15 goals last season and is a player we need to be aware of."

BHSU soccer if 0-7 all-time against Regis, but have had some close matches over that span. Last season, BHSU dropped a hard-fought match to the Rangers 2-1 on Oct. 3.
